Is renting a dorm fridge and microwave a good idea?

A plane ride away from Vandy, so wondering if renting a fridge & micro works well, or if it would be better to buy them. i do have summer storage. Thanks again.

Doesn’t make much of a difference.

They are so cheap to buy, that I wouldn’t bother renting, especially since you have summer storage. Just go to Walmart, Target, or Sams when you get there and buy them. Your roommate might have them anyway.

don’t rent, buy. We just gave away a 79 dollar Sams dorm frig that our sons used through four years of Duke and four years of Vandy. (that is some depreciation but it still looks new) It has been in paid for summer storage shared units in downtown Nashville in summers, assigned storage space available in some Vandy dorms, handed off to friends for summer school who brought it back to sons in August…you do have to park it somewhere summer term. Oh Yeah…you have storage but it is likely that on campus storage can be arranged many times. I did buy Vandy son a small microwave that could perch on the frig one summer he did summer school and on campus food was more limited. He ignored it so it is now in my kitchen.
Secondly, I was rather surprised that Vandy son didn’t want to make coffee or heat water in his room at all. I guess freshmen males don’t study in their dorm rooms as much as they study in libraries. There is a place to get coffee in the main library at Vanderbilt post a recent renovation. When they were upperclassmen living with dear friends, they did use their study stations/desks in dorm/apartment for homework. Vandy son had a single for two Vandy years as well and used his room sometimes to study. But don’t be shocked if they aren’t even in their rooms except to sleep and get the laundry done once a week.
The most important purchase you can make in my opinion is a full spectrum light bulb desk lamp. Dorm rooms can be gloomy! Light matters when you are trying to read a foreign language or read Calculus. Especially if you loft and your desk is under a bunked bed.!! spend your money at Verilux or its competitors. They run specials weekly. We also had a floor Verilux type lamp that can be raised and lowered for dorm rooms that was always perched near whatever passed for a chair in the room for reading or near the bed. Best money we spent. Frig was seldom used by my guys.

My D and her roommates have used both the fridge and the microwave quite a bit. Maybe it’s a boy/girl thing.

Just throwing in my two cents - my freshman year, my roommate and I worked out the agreement that he would bring the fridge and I would bring the microwave. Past that, there are plenty of microwaves on campus (in the munchie marts and the kitchens), though fridges are hard to come by.
Of course, if you plan on living in the suites in your upperclassmen years, they come with a fridge.

Yes, it could be a good idea. Often, you may not have a suite (due to the lottery) your second year (and maybe your third), so the fridge/microwave may come in handy.

How/where do you rent the fridge & microwave?
