Is Rutgers a "party school"?

I just got notification for Presidential, but I've heard that Rutgers has a reputation for being a "party school", which is one major reason why I'm not sure if I want to go there. Can any current students/alumni comment on this? Also, how are/were your classes, professors, etc? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

In the sense that there are a multitude of parties you could go to on any day from Thursday-Saturday, yes Rutgers is a party school. Does that mean you should let it detract from everything else the school has to offer academically and in extracurricular activities? No.

There’s a lot of freedom in a college environment like Rutgers, where it’s your choice whether you want to get drunk every night, or focus on your school work. I’ve never felt any pressure from fellow students/friends to go out all the time.

The academics here are great and you were offered the most prestigious scholarship available to go here. A visit to the school and some research will give you the answers you want to hear.

Ultimately, Rutgers gives you a vast number of educational and social opportunities and it comes down to your personal choices of how you want to use them.

Most schools are party schools. The great thing about Rutgers is that you can easily separate yourself from the party environment if you don’t like it. The College Avenue section of the campus is in the city, but the rest of Rutgers is a more suburban environment.

Every school is a party school. Especially big colleges. It doesn’t mean you have to venture to the parties though.

The fact that you are a Presidential Scholar means you will be associated with the smartest of the smart when you come to Rutgers. If you are totally against partying, there will be kids that will want to study along with you instead. If you want to try it, then there will be opportunities to try partying. I myself am not totally fond of the partying aura preferring to make the focus of college to be on academics, but I might like to try it when I go.

It’s ultimately the size of the school that gives you these many options.

And I’m a Presidential Scholar, too! What school did you get it for?

yes, this school has a sufficient number of parties per week, but from what i hear from friends who go to more “reputable” universities, most schools have parties. if you get invited to one, just decline. if you don’t deliberately go to one, it’s unlikely you’ll find yourself in one. there are always non-alcoholic parties, which i only go to.
