Is San Jose State University good for software engineer major?

I am planning to transfer to SJSU.

SJSU offers Computer engineer and Computer Science.

and it also offers software engineer in engineering department.

I wonder why software engineer major of SJSU offers classes less much than CE or CS at ASSIST.ORG and checked SJSU's site.

If I major in software engineer, should I try for software engineer's major than Computer Engineering? I know CE is more harder and requires a lot classes.

Thanks.

I’ve heard they have a pretty good program there. More importantly, it’s hard to beat the location for tech jobs.

Personally, I would choose either computer science or computer engineering over software engineering. I’m a little skeptical of “software engineering” courses – I think you’re better off taking as few of those types of classes as possible. Whether you major in CS or SE, you’re likely to end up employed as a software engineer anyway, and if you find yourself in a situation where you need to write requirements documents and UML diagrams and class hierarchies and things like that, you can learn that stuff on the job. Personally, I think that stuff is boring, and you should spend the time you have in school learning interesting things like AI and graphics and things like that.

The only time I ever had to write UML diagrams in my career was in my undergrad software engineering class. That class was a complete waste of time.

Computer engineering is typically more hardware oriented than computer science or software engineering. The latter two are more similar, but the SE major adds additional SE methods courses in place of some CS courses (one intro SE course and the additional CS courses are probably more useful than several SE courses).

At SJSU, the SE major is generally less selective than the CS major, so if you are unlikely to meet the admission threshold for the CS major, you may only have the choice to do SE.

[SJSU Admission](http://info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/narr/admission/rec-1013.html) indicates that the transfer GPA thresholds at SJSU for various majors for fall 2012 admission were:

Computer engineering: 2.40
Computer science: 3.20
Software engineering: 2.40

The thresholds could be different next year.

What good could possibly come from studying computer science in Silicon Valley?
