So you're saying that the weaker accepted students at Caltech are scared away from Caltech for fear of failure? I suppose that could happen to some students, but I think that is a minor effect. Indeed, most of Caltech's admit losses are to MIT, which is also a highly difficult school. I would expect that Caltech would lose more admit battles to Stanford and Harvard if difficulty of curriculum was the most important decision factor. Generally, students cite the lack of course offerings as well as social reasons to not matriculate.</p>
