Im looking to study geology and just wondering if it is an alright school also what's the social scene like??

SDSU is fine and reportedly stronger than U of South Dakota. You might want to also investigate the Geology Department at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, which of the three major colleges in the state, has the strongest “national” reputation in STEM fields.

An added benefit to SDSM is that a number of petroleum and mining companies recruit there which could make finding a job easier than at SDSU or USD. Mines also has a fantastic hydrology program for a school of its size if that’s of any interest to you.

Keep in mind that many (most?) students intending to major in geology have no idea what the field actually consists of. You will spend hours at a time staring down a microscope, have to take math up to multivariable calculus (ideally differential equations and linear algebra), and essentially love rocks. If that sounds exciting, then SDSMT might be a good option for you. If you’re not sure about it, you should consider a more comprehensive university.
