Is Stuyvesant Over-Rated? People talk of how its a guaranteed HYP admission if you get in. What is your opinion?

Nothing is guaranteed ever.

In general, I think it's a fantastic school but it's so difficult to get in and to excel. But, I think you can excel anywhere and you don't necessary go to Stuy to go to a top college.

stuy has an even more bolstered rep in nyc because, quite frankly, most nyc high schools really suck. it's a shame, too

According to a September 2002 high school ranking by Worth magazine, 3.67% of Stuyvesant students went on to attend Harvard, Princeton, and Yale Universities, ranking it as the 9th top public high school in the United States and 120th among all schools, public or private.[38] In December 2007, the Wall Street Journal studied the freshman classes at eight selective colleges (Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Williams College, Pomona College, Swarthmore College, U. Chicago, and Johns Hopkins[5]), and reported that Stuvesant sent 67, or 9.9% of its 674 seniors, to them.

AY8888, do you go to Stuyvesant? If so, do you think the school prepared you enough? If you took advantage of what the school offered, then you should be a decent candidate for your choice of college, just like anyone else. Going to a school with a name will never guarantee success. This goes for colleges as well.

well concerning college acceptance i am not very familiar but stuyvesant has a crazy ridiculous research program that with the competitions it entails will probably ensure a nice spot in ivy league admissions.

Stuy has great opportunities and programs if you get in, but just because you get in doesn't mean that you're a shoo-in for harvard or something. there are kids that go there that take advantage of all the things offered there and do well. there are also kids that go there that don't (my bff's cousin), and get into a lot of drugs, alchohol, and partying and forget about school by the time frosh year is over...
just like in all schools

It's only over-rated if you don't get in.

If you're bright enough to get in, but an average student (my story), you can quickly slip to the bottom 50%, and have a nervous breakdown in the process (also my story). I eventually dropped out after I had to miss 4 weeks due to a bout with mono. There was no coming back after that.

I don't think it's overrated at all. It was nuts. College and grad school did not even compare.

no, they have like 15 USAMO qualifiers a year. pretty crazy stuff

That's because 62% of the student body is Asian.

[That's what happens when there is no Affirmative Action, sad but true.]

I was accepted there, but did not go because I did not want to waste my four years of high school only studying. Stuy is INTENSE.

I think people are exaggerating and making Stuy to be some kind of "ultimate" high school when it's really not. True, people do study and lose sleep, but that's due to mismanaged time. You'd be pretty surprised how many of my friends procrastinate and I mean really procrastinate.

Have any of you all heard of IMSA (Illinois Math and Science Academy) That school is also filled with asian students!

But the intensity and anxiety there is so high that, I believe, it has the highest SUICIDE rate in the country for high schools. It's horribly depressing.

As a student at Stuy right now, all I can say that it is amazing. Its been the best four years of my life.

wow thats horrible!!!!

err, does anyone commit suicide at stuy?

I know a good amount of kids at Stuy, and I've heard that while the workload is tough, it's not impossible (and a lot of my friends there are juniors). Everyone I know who goes there is involved in ECs as well, usually in-school, and while they admit they have weeks that are tough to manage, it works out in the end.

However, no one I know LOVES it there. People hate it or tolerate it, but no one has ever said "I'd do it all over again."

That being said, I do think it's overrated. There are great schools, private and public, in NYC besides Stuy. IMO, to make a comparison...Stuy is like Harvard. Yes, it's the one that's most well-known, but there are plenty of ones that will give you the same education and it really is a matter of whether or not it's right for you.

Ditto!

Stuy is overrated only if you believe that it's the golden ticket for admission to ivy league-caliber schools. The average stuy student doesn't go to harvard, columbia, mit, or upenn; the average one probably goes to NYU or stony brook. With that being said, many students do end up at ivy league caliber schools, but it's mostly because of the individual student. They don't rely on the name or prestige of their high school.

Extending teenage_cliche's Harvard analogy... getting a Harvard degree won't guarantee you success in life, just like getting a Stuy degree won't guarantee you college admissions. Is there an advantage to attending Stuy/Harvard as opposed to other schools? There most certainly is. But is it the only great school out there? Absolutely not.

Overall, I liked my 4 years there and feel like it definitely prepared me well for post-h.s. life.

-Stuy '03

I have two really good friends who go to Stuy and they love it.

One of my experiences with an asian kid who attends Stuyvesant soured my view of the high school. Just because he got in, he acted as if he was better than everyone and would easily get into HYP. Lol. I got my likely letter from Yale, pity he's still waiting. Of course I don't think that everyone is as arrogant as him at Stuyvesant or they wont even have the 3.74% acceptance to HYP but it's hyped up too much as an instant HYP school lol. Looking back, I don't regret going to a public school over moving to the city to just take the SSHSAT for a chance at Stuyvesant. My cousin who lives in the city recently got into one of these specialized science high schools and my uncle acted as if his son got into Harvard lol. What they don't know is how much hard work their children will have to put into the 4 years at high school to even get a full-read for their college application. Its nice to go to a top notch high school, but its no way a free ticket to any ivy league, much less the top HYP. Best of luck to everyone in their college application!
