Stuyvesant

Just wondering, is there anyone on here that attends Stuyvesant High School? It seems I, a college student, always hear about this high school and crazy stuff like their students often consider Columbia a safety. Is that school just so amazing that those students don't even use CC or worry about being accepted?

Stuy is one of those schools in the City (NYC) where you have to apply to get in (amongst Brooklyn Tech, Bronx Science, etc.). I also hear it's the Harvard of these City schools. Unfortunately, I, as a Long Islander, can't attend (or even apply) for ANY of these schools, and this is the most I can tell you about them.

My BFF's cousin goes there, whom I also consider a friend
Besides knowing about the oh-so-great reputation of the school, though, the only other thing that I know that has anything to do directly with the school is that the hallways/classrooms are nice.....lol.....he has some pics up on facebook and the place always looks clean and stuff.
I doubt that they "consider Columbia as a safety," but I IDK. The kid that I'm talking about definitely wouldn't...he drinks/smokes/parties a LOT and is no more than just above average when it comes to schoolwork. But there could always be geniuses that go there or something. I think its the case where its not necessarily the SCHOOL but rather the PEOPLE that are admitted.

Basically it is a very nice, rigorous, private NYC school. I don't believe it is any better than an esteemed prep school

I was looking them up on Wikipedia and they even have escalators...which is kinda scary (especially given our school has two stories, and whenever someone breaks their leg and has to go to an upstairs class the administration changes the room for them).

Stuyvesant makes me wish I lived in New York.

alamode - Stuyvesant is not a private school. It is a magnet school within the NYC public school system. Anyone in NYC can apply, but it is very selective.

B4uleap is right, Stuyvesant is a magnet school. It is extremely competitive. The average SAT score is about 1410 on the 1600 scale. It is one of the NYC specialized high schools, but is the most competitive out of all of them. You have to take a test to get in. There are 8 other NYC specialized high schools:

High School of American Studies at Lehman College

Bronx High School of Science

Brooklyn Latin School

Brooklyn Technical High School

Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts (This one is a bit different since it requires an audition I believe.)

High School for Math, Science and Engineering at City College

Queens High School for the Sciences at York College

Staten Island Technical High School (which I applied to and got rejected from before it became one of the specialized schools).

All of these schools are selective, but Stuyvesant is definitely the hardest to get into. Out of the 20,000+ NYC residents who take the admission test, Stuyvesant only takes the top 800 scorers or something like that. Columbia a safety school though? That's seems a bit ridiculous.

No one at Stuy considers Columbia to be their safety! Once in a while there are a couple of candidates so strong that yes, they have their pick of colleges. But the "average" Stuy student, although well qualified academically, goes through the same anxiety about getting into his or her first-choice college as anyone else.

According to the parents' association bulletin, here are the results of EA/ED round, class of 2007:
Acceptances:

Harvard: 11
Cornell: 19
NYU: 17
Columbia: 7
MIT: 6
UPenn: 5
Princeton: 5
Dartmouth: 5
Georgetown: 5
Stanford: 4
Northwestern: 4

And lots of kids were deferred to regular decision.

Sorry about the mess up, thats what happens when you're trying to write 20 different things at the same time! (AIM) lol.
yeah, I think his twin sister goes to LaGuardia, not sure though

Haha ok so at least not as crazy amazing as I thought, but I'm impressed nonetheless with their placement that you've listed LurkNess.

All I know is that they always beat us in forensics. ^_^
The people that go there that I havev met are generally nice as well as smart. But I highly doubt that anyone there considers Columbia a safety.

just to clarify some things.
The reason why some people at stuy may consider Columbia (mostly for engineering, definitely not for A/S) a relatively safe school is the stuy admissions statistics that are posted every year. They are sorted by descending GPA and sometimes it looks like there is a cutoff, since most people above a certain GPA get in and most below it don't. This is very misleading because that's obviously not how admissions works. But for engineering, people with 1500+ and 96+ almost always get in, year after year because people with these stats generally have a lot of other ECs and awards to back them up and a wealth of math/science courses. Of course, people with lower GPAs definitely do get in, but they usually have something exceptional to show. Therefore, someone with a 96 avg and 1500 with a great math/science courseload, a lot of research, awards and decent recs might expect to get in just by looking at admissions stats, and they'll probably be right. Of course, this isn't "everybody" at stuy, just maybe 30-40 people, not all of which apply to columbia SEAS of course.

My friend from JHS went to Stuyvesant, I didn't even take the test for the specialized schools because i'm not competitive in academics. I've been inside Stuyvesant for my sisters H.S Graduation(her school couldn't accomodate it), and it's a very nice building, located near the former World Trade Center. My friend who went there was very smart, and he was the only one from my school that got in, so it's extremely competitive.

the stuy admissions policy is corrupt. diversity is lacking..around 60% of the school is asian, because they all enroll in test-prep courses as early as the fifth grade when they take the admissions test to get into hunter college high school, where admission is only granted in the 7th grade. thats definitely a better school too (class sizes are way smaller, better part of manhattan, easily comparable to the private schools on the upper easy side). there is a preliminary process to even take the exam at hunter, and when over 2,000 students finally do...less than 200 are admitted. basically, stuy kids are known as hunter rejects. many students opt for townsend harris which is in queens (really nice campus too)...and was ranked the best public school in nyc, stuy being 2nd. stuy and other schools like it make admission very impersonal because its all based on one exam..so its clogged with losers who are obsessed with math and do nothing else. when people there even think of taking up an extracurricular activity...they don't do it because it seems fun and its a favorite pastime...its all done to better market themselves to their prospective colleges. it's lame. the school is too big..its very impersonal...and students obsess over SAT scores. don't get me wrong, some of my closest friends went to stuy (actually about 50% of my middle school graduating class) and i go to college with many of its graduates. i'm glad i didn't go there though. and it also takes the average student over an hour to even get to in the mornings.

i attend a ultra competitive private school in the city, and i think stuyvesant isn't as "wonderful" as it seems. outside of the asian (judging from biggyboy's comment and comments made by stuy students) community, the school is little known. meanwhile, private prep schools like the one i go to have name recognition.
further, no one can call columbia a safety. not even a prep school student!

I went to stuyvesant for NYSML. The school is awesome....it's cafeteria is probably a quarter the size of my school! Yes, everything looks VERY clean and there are several escalators within the school. I'm a big fan of the school even though I dont go there (I live in westchester)...probably because I have followed the adventures of Danny Zhu to an extent LOL!

However, I hear it's all very cutthroat...but after going through my crappy school system, I wouldn't mind a school that I know offers all of the math/science olympiads.

i got into stuy and most of my friends from middle school go there, i go to LaGuardia now for art(yeah we have auditions, it varies major to major)

anyway heres the DL.
Stuy is alright most of the kids that go there have a reputation of being either a pothead a geek or someone marginally worth talking to. its fairly competative to get in and for the most part is very competative gradewise. lots of drugs! trust me, even my art school doesn't smoke up that much.

overall its very typical of a nyc public school. nothing fantastic nothing extraordinary, dont believe the hype.

^^^not true at all. there are no more drugs here than the average NYC public school.

I came across at least 10 of them at Cornell during my visit, since they wanted to see a single, in which I was currently sitting.

I actually go to Stuyvesant, unlike biggyboy and auxsoleil, so I'm not just assuming things when I say things about this school. There are a few really talented/intelligent people in our school and just some really confident kids in the school who consider Columbia a safety( i know one kid who basically said, "I'm ending up in either Harvard or MIT" and he's going to Harvard next year), but most of us don't. We do care a lot about college, which means we also care about our SAT scores, but then again, most people who want to get into a good college do these days. Academics at Stuy are a lot tougher than the ones in regular high school, and some people are really competitve. We have escalators (we have 10 floors used for academics), but they don't run on the first or tenth floor and they break sometimes.
As a response to biggyboy(who sounds like a Stuy reject in his post):
- We are not all Hunter rejects. There are many kids who tried out for Hunter and got rejected, but there are also kids who didn't bother to take the test for whatever reason. Also, I know a handful of kids who went to Hunter and decided to come to Stuy.
- We're not all math nerds. There are many math geeks in the school, but also kids who prefer history/English, and there are those who excel in everything.
- Most students in my school take extracurriculars because they enjoy them. Yes, there are some who just do it for college.
And to auxsoleil:
Oh really? What high school do you go to? Whenever someone asks me what high school I attend, they know the name immediately (both Asians and non-Asians). I can't think of private school better known than Stuy right now. Actually, the only private school I can think of right now is Regis, and that is only because the speech/debate team always has competitions there.

there are many other top schools that have better placement and more overachievers
