I’m 22 and I’ve been looking at Syracuse for undergraduate. I’ve completed a few net price calculators and based my current income (and income of whatever job I’ll have in school) and by the time I graduate I’ll have about $60-$65k in student loans to pay off. I plan on going to either med school or law school (I’ll be deciding in the next few months) so I already know I’m going to have student loan debt. Is Syracuse worth it for undergrad?
No. If you were applying to one of the best-regarded pre-professional programs at Syracuse, such that you could reasonably expect to go straight into a high-paying job after graduation, then maybe… but for pre-med/pre-law, absolutely not. Don’t start taking on debt as an undergrad when you have grad school debt ahead of you. There are many affordable public universities that are every bit as good for a pre-med/pre-law education as SU.
If you are already 22 and don’t know whether you want to do pre med OR pre law, my advice is that you should not do either, especially pre-law, because you can go to law school with any major and a pre law program will not really give you any benefit. Law and Medicine generally require 2 completely skill sets. At 22, you are looking at starting med school at 26, and that is already kind of old for a 1st year med student. If you are interested in doing an undergrad degree in a field that Syracuse offers a good program in, you should consider it, otherwise, look to a school with a good program in your undergrad major, ignore pre-law/pre-med.
If you still want to do med school after college, look at one of the many post bac pre med programs that have linked admissions with medical schools, if you even still need to take the science classes.
