Next fall i plan on transferring to a UC campus from a ccc so i'll be applying this coming November. My accumulative GPA is 3.72 and I think my transferable GPA might be slightly higher. My main goal is to get into UCLA as a physiology or molecular genetics major. With the slight help from the TAP program I hope to get in. However, as a safety net i'll be applying to several UC's and want to do a TAG with one of them.

My main choices for a TAG are UCSB, UCSC, or UCD... but when I look at the TAG Matrix I start to wonder what's the point...

UCSB:
Is the major guaranteed as part of TAG -- "No for majors in the College of Letters and Science" -- (I'm a bio related major so this means that the "guaranteed" wont be a "guaranteed")

UCSC:
Is the major guaranteed as part of TAG -- "Yes for majors in the Jack Baskin School of Engineering. No for all other major" (So basically same story as UCSB)

UCD:
This school doesn't have too much fine print in the TAG Matrix, but to be honest this is not my first school of choice.. and I dont want to send mix messages to other schools ie: UCLA or UCSB... but then again the whole cliche of "Better safe than sorry comes into mind"... Also, it says that my CCC needs to review it by the 15th. Who would I have to contact to get that taken care of? Counselors are basically booked until spring 2014... :/

Would it be better for me to just skip out on TAG all together, so come this November there are no false biases on my applications (ie: me tagging like my 3rd or 4th school of choice rather than my 1st or 2nd) and just approach the application with a clean slate and see where my overall academic merit lands me??

Ha, I sure hope so! Hmm, guess this monday I have to burn some time trying to find a faculty member who can somehow let UCDavis know they have reviewed my TAG… Don’t they want to students who can handle something like that independently?

At my ccc the counselors automatically get the TAG application once you submit it and before they send it on to the UC. I am tagging UC Davis. I have gone to 2 TAG workshops at my CCC and the counselors have helped me finalize the application. Once I knew it was complete they said to hit submit and that they would be reviewing it before it actually gets sent off. So it sounds like them reviewing it is an automatic step.

I agree that you should TAG to at least one school. Even if it is your 4th choice. UCLA is extremely tough to get into. Your stats look very good but better safe than sorry. I believe that UCLA or other schools won’t look at this at all and if they do you are merely being realistic and smart about your applications. You can still TAP to UCLA and do a regular application to the others. You are just covering all your bases and that is the smart thing to do.

Thankfully no, I was embellishing (pretty significantly) on the fact that getting a counselor appointment seems to get more and more difficult these days to budget cuts especially when you want to meet with the TAP counselor at your school.

I also now realize that I had misunderstood a part of the TAG Matrix. The TAG must be reviewed by your CCC before Oct. 15th which I had accidentally mistaken for Sept. 15th (Have in mind this is only for a few of the UC campuses) . I’m not entirely sure of the process behind how this gets done. The UC’s receiving a TAG probably kicks it back to the CCC in which the student comes from… for an initial review from a CCC counselor at his/her school… But I could be wrong. Going to ask the faculty this coming week at my school to see if anyone know for certain. I’m sure someone will.

Signing a TAG with UC Davis will not send mixed messages to any of the other schools you apply to, nor will it create “false biases.” If you want to sign a TAG just for the assurance of acceptance, don’t sweat it and just do it! However, if UC Davis isn’t a top choice of yours and you can’t seem to get a counselor appointment, it’s up to you to pursue the TAG. I think you’d get accepted regardless.

Why would tagging one school send mixed messages to others? I don’t see why TAG has anything to do with another school denying or accepting your application, it is supposed to be based on purely academic merit.

I TAG for UCD last year. Once UCD accepted my TAG they sent out the conditions that i need to fulfill to get in. They were much clearer compare to other UC like UCI and UCSD. So once UCD accepted you TAG it like a guarantee you will get in with the major u chose as long as you completed what they asked. For the other 2 schools, they dont tell you what you need to do, and it’s not guarantee even if ur TAG got accepted like UCD.
