What are requirements beyond competed application, app fee, HS transcripts and ACT/SAT scores?

I just applied and got accepted for the class of 2018. I actually called when I was applying to ask about letters of recommendation and they said not to send them. The letters of reccommendation are for honors applicants only. There are too many kids for them to look through every letter. Other than that there are no other requirements. I would say one thing that you should do for your application is do not put any branch campuses as back ups when you apply. I only put University Park so that they knew that’s where I wanted to go.

^ Dont think that makes a difference. What does make a difference is if you op into going to the summer session if needed.

^in fact, not writing down a 2nd campus is bad advice, because it has no bearing upon the decision to admit you (the admission office isn’t going to think "wow they’re so committed to UP they didn’t write down a 2nd choice, let’s admit them… Nope: check out the Bubble Chart) and if you may have been okay with the Behrend College/Erie, or Harrisburg, or Altoona, and end up at Beaver or Dubois because you didn’t write in your favorite choice, you may be in a bind.
As Etuck said, choosing the summer session makes a difference and applying undecided too (but that’s only if you’re not in the “blue” dots on the bubble chart, because applying directly to a college may mean merit scholarships if you’re applying to some of them like Eberly.) In addition, because it’s rolling admissions, apply as soon as you can after Sept 1 (when the app goes live): the earlier you apply, the better. The later, the higher the odds of NOT getting UP.

It’s true you don’t need a LOR. If you give your stats, you can get a pretty accurate idea of whether you’ll get in, thanks to the bubble chart (which is basically GPAXSAT score, with GPA 2/3 of the decision).

Thanks everyone for the info. Might anyone know how various ACT scores correspond to the SAT scores on the bubble chart; thinking my son’s ACT scores are better than his SAT, but not certain?

Can you give the ACT and SAT scores?

He will have a 3.9 GPA and currently a 1780 SAT and 28 ACT. Just took both again in the past couple of weeks with hopes of increasing. I think his intention is to apply to business school; unless convinced DUS is a must with those scores. I would think he would go to a different college if placed in non-UP campus, but that has not really been discussed at this point.

28 = 1800-1850 or so 3.9 + 28 ACT (combination = blue dot) + applying Sept1st = excellent odds
even if Smeal is more competitive (so, not as sure as “undecided”, but safer than Engineering)
so for added safety/guarantee adding he’s willing to attend the summer session => should mean an admission
As far as you know, would you/he be willing to attend in the summer in order to increase his odds? (it may not be necessary to put “summer session” with these stats though if he applies Sept 1st or so).

I would just suggest to apply for summer as well because everyone is evaluated for fall first and those who just miss the cut are offered summer, so you can make that decision later if it even becomes relevant.

Thanks for the info, folks.

Son just got his latest ACTs back today and inched up to a 29. Hoping that score and GPA gets him directly into business instead of DUS. Guess time will tell.
