Is the CO-OP worth it?

I’m currently deciding between Northeastern and BU, and the one thing that really stands out about Northeastern is the coop.

However, I have heard that the coop is only good for those who have very technical and applicable majors, like graphic design or engineering. What about those who major in English or History? Do they get good coops too?

Plus, how are Northeastern academics besides the coop? Do they stand up to BU?

No matter what your major is, you’ll want to figure out what to do after graduation and prepare for that, so co-op still has its uses. But if Northeastern will cost an extra $50,000 in loans to come here over BU, no, it’s not worth it. What are the aid offers at both schools, and what are you financial limitations?

In terms of cost, BU and Northeastern are basically the same for me, so I’m not too worried about that

I think you would need to ask the English or History departments about where their students do their co-ops. I’m only familiar with DS and his friends who all had great co-op placements in the health sciences, business/accounting, and engineering – no liberal arts majors.

I’ll be honest as a student currently attending the school and say that the co-op program is best if you are in business, engineering, or health sciences or a conventionally “practical” field. As an english or history student, you would be much better off going to a school like BU that is more heavily focused on academia and less experiential learning.

I don’t think you’d be better off necessarily, just the co-op program shouldn’t be as much of a deciding factor than it would be in business, engineering, comp sci. Schools are tied on USNWR and in many ways tit for tat. I would visit both and see which one you like better if they cost the same.
