Is the freshmen internship a futile goal?

I have searched numerous times in my career center and cannot find an internship for finance. I would like one but perhaps its best just to wait until sophomore/junior years.

A majority of sophomores at targets (think Harvard, Wharton, Princeton, Dartmouth, Stanford, Yale, Columbia, etc.) are having trouble getting interviews for good finance internships (ones at GS, MS, Blackstone, UBS, DB etc.).

Start cold calling/emailing. You can definitely get something somewhere (boutiques, PWM type gigs); just don’t go expecting GS IBD. It’s never to early too get some experience; especially since you go to a non-target (Baruch?), you want a leg up on the competition in the future.

Would you have any recommendations for boutiques to cold call? As I don’t live in the city, I feel as thought the only boutiques I have exposure to are those that are on that upper tier with the rest of the BB’s.

Either that, or would you have recommendations about how to go about doing research to find these?

I honestly think you need to start with something smaller, maybe not even finance related. Look for government jobs at the treasury or commerce department or even capital hill. There are tons “business” related that will allow you to show some work experience going forward.

Like ^ said…try to get some sort of wealth management internship…I’m currently working at my Universities Endowment Investment office for example…

Otherwise I feel like it is to hard to get anything more finance related as a freshman w/o prior work experience…you need to start somewhere push papers etc.

dude don’t worry about sophomore finance internships…the majority of people I know at goldman didn’t do a finance internship their freshman year
