I really want to get the macbook pro for college next year, but I am worried that it will be too heavy to lug around everywhere, everyday, which is what I expect to be doing. (Although since it's my first year, I really have no idea)

It is 5.4 lb and I am a petite girl... kind of weak, haha.

I was also looking at the Sony Vaio SZ which is 3.75lb, but has a smaller screen. (I want a bigger screen because I use some programs that need the extra space) Also, if I were to get this one, I would want to set up an extra monitor in my dorm.

HOWEVER - I really like the Mac OS X better than Vista.

What do you think? How have you guys managed?

if you want to get a mac, skip getting the pro and get the regular macbook. i will also be attending college in the fall and just purchased the white midrange macbook. the 13" screen really isnt that bad, i was used to a 17" desktop and am perfectly fine using the macbook. i had also originally wanted the macbook pro but my parents convinced me that i would not need the extra features that it offered. i suggest only get the macbook pro if you do alot of heavy video editing or gaming. otherwise a macbook will be perfect for you, you can use the extra money that you would have spent to add extra features like more ram and accessories like a case.

im also a girl but am 5'8". i thought the smaller size would be better to because it would be able to fit easily in a backpack. its not very heavy it only weighs 5.1 pounds.

it shouldn't be a problem. it might be if you prefer to carry it in any sort of bag that only goes on one shoulder...mine does anyway, but it weighs a pound more. it'll be fine if you carry it in a slip case (by hand) or a backpack.

if you know anyone with a similar laptop, you could also try carrying it around so you can find out for yourself. i don't think you need a < 4-pound laptop though. and do (re)consider the regular macbooks, like pianoisland suggested.

Pro gets so hot your hands sweat, you can forget using it on your lap. It also makes more noise and takes up your whole desk which makes it not so practical for class. The only real advantage is the screen, but a far better solution is a macbook and 20-inch cinema display for your dorm for about the same price. The mini DVI connector (or whatever it is) snaps on and off really easily.

EDIT - Also, the regular macbook has better battery life and wireless reception and is more durable (that thin metal casing bends easily).

Yeah the macbooks are way cuter, but if it only weighs .4lb less, which isn't much for the amount of decreased screen space. Plus, like I mentioned before, I will probably be opening up and using a ton of different applications at once, so I need the best. (Okay, I don't NEED the best, but I want the best) :)

yeahhhbaby, i have a pro and i love it. it doesn't get to hot, it's not too big and it really isn't that heavy. it weighed less than all my textbooks. i found i had no problems taking it from class to class last year.

Seriously, though, they don't weigh much (almost unnoticeable...really...) and while they DO get fairly hot, that's the case with any computer (it's just that w/ a metal case, the MBP's case really conducts the heat outward...)
Anyway, if you want the fastest possible w/ the widest screen and most stable system (thats still widely compatible and pre-installed), go with the Macbook Pro. Make sure you get an educational discount, though! I'd actually suggest waiting on getting the laptop if you can -- many schools offer a discount off the educational discount if you wait to get your laptop in October -- when they are trying to get rid of their extra unsold stock!
