Is the partying at IU really this overpowering?

Hey guys,

I'm about 90% sure I'm going to IU next year. Living in Indiana, I always hear that IU is a party school, but I never thought that partying would be the dominant culture. Then I found this video:

YouTube - theU.com - Indiana University: "Intro"

I like to have a good time, but I don't always need alcohol to have fun. This video, saying "the only night people don't party is sunday," "IU has a huge party rep" and "when they're not partying, they're doing this and that" isn't what I wanted to hear, as far as being able to concentrate in school. The video made it sound like students at IU spend every spare minute partying and I feel like that might be too much of a distraction to me.

Is the video a good representation of what actually happens at IU? And is it easy to avoid those things when you need to?

...thanks.

This is my freshmen year at IU and I’ve only been to a party once. So you can certainly avoid it. My dorm is also pretty quite but it’s probably because it’s an LLC.

When will you learn not to believe everything you see/hear on the internet? Sheesh.

I think you would be hard pressed to find someone who attends a party every day of the week (but I am sure it is achievable). Most people only party on Fridays and Saturdays, but there are always people at the bars.

You will be fine. There are all kinds at IU and you will see that most people remember that they are in college for a reason. There will be parties with drinking and those without. Your experience at IU is what you make it, you’ll enjoy IU how you want to.

Even on my crazy floor no one has managed to party 7 days out of the week. This video is a hyperbolic account of partying at IU. It may seem a bit overwhelming when you first get to IU and everyone is out every night during Welcome Week, but it will tone down quickly once classes start.

People do study… a lot. It’s impossible for me to ever find somewhere to sit in the Wells library because it’s always so crowded with people studying… even on weekends. Don’t let this video scare you.

It’s a giant school. Yes, there will be a party every night of the week at IU. Whether you want to go to them or not is your decision. I can basically guarantee that no student will go every night of the week though (unless they’re a trust fund baby).

IU is a great place - it gives you every opportunity out there. Ultimately YOU get to decide your future and what you do every night. My brother is a part of the greek life at IU (Beta) and he is also a HUGE partier. Yet even he only partied 3 or 4 nights a week (yet still somehow managed a 3.94…).

Honestly I find it amazing how worried and concerned people get over IU’s party scene. No one is going to force you to drink!!! I’m a freshman and I drank thurs/fri/sat/sometimes mon during the first two thirds of the semester because I WANTED TO. I will say that since it has gotten cold the party scene has died down and worse cuz all the girls are wearing jeans!! Everyone DOES calm down during the cold though (lot more people in the library, less hookups, etc), so don’t judge everything based only on the first two thirds of your semester!! Also make friends with people that like to party AS MUCH as you, otherwise you may have problems finding a party when you want one come later in the semester.

Imagine a college that only accepted kids that were in the BOTTOM 20% of there high school class. that is what IU feels like once you get here and the average IQ at IU barely exceeds that of a carrot.

the partying is the main life here and even when you’re sitting in class ur listening to the kid behind you talking to some girl, ohhh the usual “yeah i got four bids and i was on bar duty with the skulls last night and i was soooo ****ed up and i started puking everywhere and then i started doing shots and then i lost my bid because there all little ■■■■■ faggots” and its annoying because you wish you were surrounded by people that were actually mature. then that night, which happenz to be tuesday, ur walking down your hall in Teter and u see 30 girls all dressed up and these guys getting ready to go pregame for some random thing and they all come back and when u get up in the morning u cant even brush ur teeth because every sink is filled with barf, blood, or TEETH. And no I am not joking about the teeth. I live in Teter and i cannot even IMAGINE what goes down in Northwest, I have never even been up there except for my A100 class at Mcnutt and that whole area on fee lane by mcnutt and foster just smells bad and feels sketchy and vulnerable, i hate it.

I hate alcohol, and i know I shouldn’t but i negatively judge people who choose to drink. I’ll still be friends wuth them but i dont want to hear about how they *ed four girls or about how this guy made these girls do handstands as he poored vodka down their *. i still made a lot of friends at IU but i will be leaving next year and this is part of the reason why, IU is out of control and they need to do something about it.

Welch1016, I’m sorry you’ve had such a negative experience in the dorms. I lived in Northwest my freshman year and I even found my floor to be too quiet for my liking sometimes - nobody ever went out or had any fun! Now that I’m living in a sorority, I find that nearly every girl has managed to create a perfect balance between getting great grades and experiencing the party culture that IU is so (in)famous for. IU is one hell of a good time, but it’s also one hell of a good school. How you blend the two is entirely up to you.

Only at IU hahahaha. Sad thing is, I’ve seen the exact same thing.

This vid is BS and I remember watching the exact same video as a senior. Most people at IU go out, but really, no one is MAKING you. Do what you want, we’re adults now. And you’ll have no problem finding a group who doesn’t go out every weekend; this school has every kind of person imaginable.
