So apparently IU is just for partying and nothing much else, according to this:

…yeah, there was another recent thread on this. It HAS been voted #1 party school a few/several of the recent years. There is a lot of partying. But…there WOULD be…it’s HUGE. I know a kid who opted for an honors floor at their dorm and it was SO quiet she hated it and moved as soon as she could. My D is NOT NOT NOT a party-er…and doesn’t care to be around it. I’m not sure I’d let her go there if she had to be in McNutt (although, as you all know, the specific dorm and floor make huge differences). She has to work VERY hard for her academic successes…she doesn’t roll into bed at 1am (very often) and out at 5:30 and then ace all her tests all day. She HAS to study. So she’s very anxious about sleep and quiet study. I know MANY very academic kids who’ve attended this school, VERY successfully. You only have to be on campus for a year. And you can select locations where there is much less in the way of partying. My neice went here in…oh…1995 ish. Even THEN McNutt was the party dorm. But she was a Wells Scholar and got herself into an Ivy League graduate school. So…yeah, it’s a party school if you want it to be. Nearly all of them are.

I watched the videos for IU and a bunch of other colleges and they all pretty much made each school out to be a giant party with drunken students stumbling around everywhere…

So yeah, they make a lot of colleges look pretty bad. But I’m not going by these videos, they probably only represent a fraction of the entire student body at large universities.

IU is what you make it.
You want to party every night? You can make it happen.
You want to JUST study extremely productively every night? You can do that too.
Somewhere in between? Easily done.

theU’s videos are geared toward high school students who want to go to college and party because freedom and partying is part of the stereotypical college experience. It is also easy to say that people go out every night of the week because there are people out every night of the week with such a large student body.

truth801 has it right. I was a near-straight-A student in high school, in Hutton at IU, but what’s wrong with enjoying partying while in college? There are nearly 40,000 kids here–of course there is going to be something going on every night of the week. But there definitely isn’t pressure to get drunk every night, I’ve stayed in plenty of weekend nights to study and there’s no shortage of kids doing the same thing (even living in NW). I personally love having the option of partying, it’s obviously fun but it’s nice to have it there on the weekends rather than sitting around, looking for fun and not having anything to do.

I agree with ElizaB. I’m also in NW and Hutton, and I’m a DA to Kelley. Obviously, I do study, and I do stay in some weekend nights. That said, I’ve never been alone on my floor on the weekends. I like to go out, but grades are a priority. Most people I’ve encountered are the same way. Work hard, play hard!
