The prompt asks me to tell my future room mate about myself, and I focused my essay about talking about how I'm an idiot (in a humorous way, naturally!) and was wondering if that would work? The basic principle is to let them know I'm not just a pile of academia, but maybe it's too much, is sort of what I'm wondering...any thoughts?

I think the important thing is, you show your personality. Don't talk about what they want to hear, talk about you as yourself.

Hmm...I see. Well then, would my catch phrase be okay? It's "I am every form of [other word for donkey] except for the one which walks on all fours." I was debating writing the essay about this saying of mine, but it seemed too risky. What do you think?

In that case, I'd say it's a little risky. You don't want to offend some old woman reading your essay, you know?
But if you can convey that same spirit, and ensure that it's neither annoying or disturbing, then I think you're golden. :)

Haha, okay, well the essay being about how I'm an idiot will probably work better (I haven't the slightest on how I could rewrite the other essay without using that metaphor.) Thanks. :)

I would steer clear of either of those topics -- not a donkey nor an idiot. My family visited many, many colleges and nearly every one of them mentioned during the information session that applicants should be very careful using humor on their essays. If you think you're funny, but you're not, your essay will go over very poorly. If you know for a fact that you're a funny person, then that could work in your favor -- admissions personnel do enjoy funny essays. But a lot of people think they're funny when they're not! I probably wouldn't use one of my only opportunities to explain who I am, and why "you" might want me in your school, by explaining that I'm an idiot or a "donkey." That's just my opinion.

hey i495
i tried to pm you but your inbox was full
i just wanted to say thanks for your help! your feedback was really useful

oh oops i wrote in the wrong thread. sorry.
but i don't know about using the word '.......' in the essay. it does seem very risky to me.

Hmm...I see. In general, most people laugh when I try to be humorous, but of course, I'm speaking in person when I do so. If it's misinterpreted that would most certainly pose a problem. I'll see if I can find a safer topic.
