Is the TI-89 worth it?

in my school, we're not allowed to have 89, only 83

cecile, I have a TI89 (made in 1998) I just went through this problem yesterday, I needed those funcitons for a quiz...

apparently, my 1998 TI89 is so old that it doesn't have those funcitons

so you either need to download them or buy a TI 89 Titanium model (which I did cause i didn't have the cable)

chillaxin: "I have the 89 titanium ...However, I know that we're not allowed to use it on the AP tests"

R U Sure??
what about on SATs?

You are allowed to use it on APs, and SATs. (I took these last year, with the 89, so unless a policy change, it would be the same.)

I love the 89. I really can't use anything else anymore - been using it since 7th grade.

89 > God, Kurt Godel, Tom Apostol, and every other mathematician sitting in your head solving problems for you

There's a reason why you aren't allowed to use it before Calculus. It's called the solve feature.

I prefer the TI-89 because I like the interface better. I have the original TI-89 (mine is from December 2003) but I have heard nothing but good about the new Titanium model. If your book teaches to a TI-83 you might have to adapt so keep that manual in your bookbag--it's not fat like the TI-83's is.

Tech note: The TI-89 uses the Motorola 68000 processor. It's about as powerful as the Macintosh Classic, a desktop computer made from 1990-1992. The only difference is size--a Classic weighs about 18 pounds when fully equipped. The TI-89...well, it's the same size as the TI-83 which means it's pocket-sized. Mine has 512K RAM (it's more equivelent to the Macintosh 512K, which was the old version of the Classic with less RAM); the new ones probably have more than that.

I hate being dependent on calculators (habit from the chinese education system I guess), although I will purchase 89 when I enter university(and borrow one from school for AP exams). however I gota admit TI-89 is a very effective and efficient answer checker, the solve feature is just too sweet.

is well worth it. It saves so much time. Yes, you probably won't learn how to do everything as thoroughly as if you didnt have it but its worth it to me. I swear that thing has saved me on several math tests. As long as you learn how to do everything without the calculator or atleast understand the material then you wont regret buying it. Some people i know dont actually learn what they are doing so if they have to do the same problems without the calculator, they just get beasted by the tests.
