Is the U Michigan NPC for OOS correct?

Possibly, any anyone who has spent anytime on the UofM campus knows there are many wealthy kids attending that uni.

^ That is true. With over 40% oos students and most receive little financial aid. There are certainly many wealthy kids there. Nevertheless, around 58% students are from in state that would have need met. A further increase in endowment is aiming to attract good oos students who otherwise cannot afford going to UMich.

Last year, their 8.4 billion endowment was the second largest in public universities and #7 overall in the country while they are trying to raise 4 billions more. One should not be surprised to see some OOS students receiving generous aid from the school even now.

By the way, last time it took 4 years to raise 3.2 billion dollars (around double) in endowment (2004-2008). It is likely to take less than 4 years to achieve this 4 billion dollars goal (around 50% increase) in the campaign launched last year.

Some kids I know from a few years ago got $10K merit awards from Umich. That its sticker price is about $10K less than the top private schools means that those not eligible for financial aid can get $80K savings over 4 years at a mighty fine school. I know some kids that picked it over ND, Gtown, and BC for that reason. With that discount, UM is still getting a bit of premium over what it’s charging in state kids. Getting a little bit of an upgrade on the student and still getting more money per kid when they do this.

$10,000 for a family that can afford$50,000 is a good deal. The bottom line is year in and year out out of state kids come to the forums and want to know if they will get “good aid” at UofM and right now the answer is “maybe yes, maybe no”.

This decade’s fundraising (UofM fundraises just about every decade – is called Victors for Michigan and it is about 1-year in:
