Is the NPC accurate? I just ran it, and our estimated net price was $14,000. I was surprised because we are OOS.
We were interested in UM, but thought we wouldn’t receive much aid. I know it is just an estimate, but it puts UM within reach.

It depends on how simple/complicated your family situation is. For us, it is pretty accurate. If you are self employed, divorced, running business, etc, the calculator can be off. UMich has been getting more generous to OOS students in recent years.
The UM net price calculator was accurate for us. We are not a high income family, but we’re not ridiculously low income either. My daughter gets a terrific aid package, plus departmental scholarship and work study. Everything we’ve been promised has come through. When we were comparing schools…we found that more selective universities offer more aid than less selective universities as a general rule. Doesn’t seem like the better, more expensive school should cost less in the long run…but this is often the case when it’s a more selective school with a deep bench of successful donors.
It was accurate for us, but we are in-state and it is much easier to exceed income thresholds. I found the NPC quite inaccurate for complicated situations.
Thank you!
I used the NPC and it said UM will cover 100 percent of my tuition. My parents’ income is only slightly lower than the national average and I’m also in-state. For such a large school this seems really hard to believe. Any insights?
@jake0810 I think U-M covers full need for in-state students.
“For such a large school this seems really hard to believe.”
Good schools give good financial aid. Michigan in particular has the largest endowment of any public school in the country.
I’m OOS and because of a recent financial campaign, I also get 100% tuition coverage since my family makes less than $65k/yr. Their financial aid program is improving.
Don’t forget… “covers 100% tuition” doesn’t mean “100% tuition, room and board”
i am very interested in this thread b/c NPC gives us $10,500 (without work study / loans, free $$$ only) which puts UM in striking distance for us. i would not have imagined UM would have been in the realm of possibility but in the last few months reading CC i learned that UM is following the lead of Virginia, UNC and other top schools in giving generous aid.
so thank you CC and all you posters for being a treasure chest of good information.
@lilydarling That is correct. I currently pay ~$10k a year for living in a dorm + dining plan. I just don’t pay anything for classes.
