Let's say you are applying to a top-tier institution, and you come from a HIGHLY COMPETITIVE high school (Read: 700 people applying to the same colleges that will only take 5-20 kids).

Does it make much of a difference if you have a 2330 or a 2350? 2330 or 2370?

echoing above: no. colleges understand that someone taking the SAT three different times with no prep in between will probably get a range of scores. most schools put 2250+ scorers in the same category.

you can't really have 700 people all apllying to HYP. Even if you do, the intangibles would be a better way to differentiate yourself. So don't retake it

bobbo07 means you are more than just your SAT score. Your extracurriculars, essay, course load, GPA, recommendations, all come into play.

As far is the colleges are concerned, the is No difference between a 2340, 2360 and 2380 and they would never use those scores to decide between two students. Even a 2400 is not significantly better than a 2340 because the population is so small at that level the test will not discriminate well between the 2300+ students. 2400 is also not necessarily a "perfect" score, either, as you can earn a 2400 on some tests and still get questions wrong.

You're SAT score is fine. You're done with that.

ANY score of 2300+ is excellent. The difference between a 97 percentile and 99 percentile on one section is not going to make a difference to the colleges.

On the other hand, if you LIKE paying your money to the College Board, feel free.

A friend of mine got into yale last year with a 3.8 gpa, 2100 sat score...She, along with everyone else, was shocked to see the letter of acceptance.

In some circumstances, it may matter. For instance, kid is applying to MIT for math/physics/or any technical major that MIT is famous for. He got a 2310 on the SAT. 800 on writing, 780 on reading, 730 on math. MIT might (and according to experienced friend, most probably will) frown upon the kid. He has to take the test over, and even if he scores a 2310, he needs to get a higher math score.
