Is there a Financial Aid 101?

I'm new here and have a Sophmore daughter and Freshmans son and trying to understand the American college situation, including how to pay for it. I'm originally from Canada and quite clueless about all of this. Where should I start reading? This is very overwhelming.

Thanks!

Two sources that are recommended around here quite often: FinAid! Financial Aid, College Scholarships and Student Loans and the book "How to Pay for College Without Going Broke".

Good luck!

Thank you Chedva - that first link is exactly what I needed.

I read the info that's stickied at the top of the page, but I'm needing something even more basic.

I got a lot out of the "without going broke" book Chedva mentioned. Your local library probably has it.

Also check out College Goal Sunday, which provides free assistance with FA matters:
College Goal Sunday :: Your source for student financial aid information and paying for college

Since you are from Canada, you may want to check out your kids options for going North to study. Lots of good schools up there, and they're generally less expensive than their peer institutions in the US.
