I know, it sounds like a stupid question. After all, I got in to Harvard, and that's where I most want to go. It's where I've dreamed of going for the last 2 years.

The problem is that my parents are urging me to apply to Yale just for the sake of applying and having that extra "safety net" until May 1st.

My parents are like "What if Harvard goes bankrupt or falls massively into dis-repute between now and May 1st (decision deadline), and then you wouldn't be able to go there because it either won't exist or will have no rep, and you will at least be able to go to Yale instead??" They argue that given the weak state of US & worldwide economy anything is possible.

It sounds silly I know, but they are arguing that if I've worked so hard it technically doesn't hurt to send just one more app. My point of view is that I would have to write the "In this required second essay, tell us something that you would like us to know about you that we might not get from the rest of your application" essay in under 5 hours.

I have very strong stats and am inclined to believe I have a strong chance of getting into Yale too. I'm an international student btw.

Is there any reason in what my parents are arguing? Should I be worried that Harvard might somehow go down the drain? Or is it just scaremongering?

Your thoughts and comments would be really appreciated.

Harvard is not going to go bankrupt or be disgraced before May. It sounds like your parents would like you to collect another trophy.

The only reason to apply to Yale (or any other school) is because you think you might prefer going there to going to Harvard. If there’s any chance, however small, that you’d choose Yale over Harvard, then by all means apply. To apply because Harvard might go out of business? Silly.

DON’T apply. If you have gotten into the school of your dreams, why would you take away the opportunity for someone else to get into the school of their dreams. If you know you aren’t going to go, why bother?

I agree with the “don’t apply” suggestions. Why put someone else on the waitlist when you have no intention of attending.
It sounds to me that M & D just want bragging rights about you getting accepted to both Harvard & Yale.

I just wanted to let you all know that I’ve decided that I won’t apply to Yale. “cats4u”, “bioboy12” and “wjb” I just wanted to thank you especially for your input- your comments definitely made me consider how I would have felt in the opposite position. I hope my decision will help someone else achieve their hopes and dreams in life too.

To any of you who replied and who are applying to Yale this Fall, I thank you for your advice and wish you all the best of luck for getting in. I am really happy about getting into Harvard and about the fact that I will be going there next year (actually it’s this year now lol :P), and hope that you will have the same happiness and success with getting into your first choice schools too.

No, don’t apply. From an ivy leaguer to another, I’m just saying they don’t like when you apply to a lot of other ivys. Just stick to your school
