Is there anything special about the way University of California admissions work?

I have seen some of the schools list their own application dates, and others say “University of California application date”. Furthermore the site that bridges all the campuses has an application page.

What is going on?

Do you apply to UC in general then get put in a school or schools?

The UCs are their own system (the University of California system) and thus they are not like other private universities. They have their own special application and deadline.

You can apply to as many UCs as you want: it is one unified application but it’s $70 for each UC you apply to. But, not all the UCs are the same so you should carefully select which ones to apply to–you choose which ones to be considered for at the time of your application.

UC 's have one application period Nov 1-30. As stated above^^^, you can apply to as many campuses as you want but each has a separate application fee of $70.

There is also the Cal state system and their application period is from Oct 1-Nov 30. Separate application with $55 per campus.

Just remember that each UC or Cal state has a different level of selectivity and all are different in location and “personality”.
