Is there is there any way to be a medical consultant?

I know this sounds kind of, well, dumb, but is there any job were one just serves as a consultant and not an actual hands-on practicioner. For example, could someone get an advanced degree in a field like toxicology (just for the sake of example) and serve as a consultant on related cases, making reccomendations to physicians and the like? The closest thing I've heard of is pharmacy, but are there other options?

Thanks.
