Is There Much To Do Off-Campus?

I'm applying to Cornell this year.
I heard Cornell is a very isolated place in the middle of nowhere.
I don't think I would like the idea of being cramped on campus but do a lot of people travel to nearby cities in their spare time?

Sure, but most people stay on campus and in Ithaca over the weekend, as even if you aren't studying, there are a bunch of on-campus and off-campus diversions, like sports, extracurriculars, jobs, and parties.

Most people will travel to Boston, Montreal, Toronto, NYC on long weekends maybe once or twice a semester. If you are into concerts or professional sports, it isn't unheard of making a quick trip to Buffalo or Rochester, but Ithaca has a very good concert scene.

bring a car if you can...

a car is a nice luxury....but they're a pain in the butt to have in Ithaca. Parking fees are ridiculous.

How much is gas now around NY?? We're down to $2.15 in New Orleans :-)

2.15!? o.o

i wonder how much it is in texas...

It was $2.79 last time I filled up in Wilton, CT. might be even less now...The highways also have cheaper gas.

What are the parking fees? Are they for on-campus parking or in the streets/garages of Ithaca?

there's almost no on-campus parking, and what little there is is for faculty. so most students don't have cars unless they live in apartments off campus, which charge around $400 a year for a parking space.

On-campus parking for those living in the dorms is around $700 (at least it was when I lived on campus). If you live in collegetown and your landlord doesn't offer parking or does at a separate cost...it can run around $1,000 (lowest I ever heard was $600 and the highest was $2,000).

If you don't want to pay for a spot...you can try to find free on street parking after 6 pm but good luck.

I think I'll walk.

I think Ithaca itself has plenty for me. I have lost track of the number of times I've ventured down there for one thing or another. it's exciting.

I however have not made the least effort to travel to any further cities. I can't imagine how that would work, because I wouldn't have any place to stay overnight.

Yeah...I didn't have a car on campus and no one really drives to class, save for the commuters. Besides...if the weather is exceptionally terrible or you're just feeling lazy there's the TCAT which I found to be reliable to get around campus...when I needed to go food shopping I never had trouble getting a ride from a friend.

Are there a lot of commuters?

Last I checked it was around 1.90 in San Antonio :).

students sometimes go to syracuse for a day trip if they want to go shopping. but there is always something to do on campus and in ithaca that going far away isnt worth it

It's pretty isolated and it is in the middle of nowhere. Come visit and try to stay a few days. There ARE things to do off-campus, but it's usually nature related. Cornell is very campus focused.

If you want to be in a place that's like the center of the world, go to a college in NYC. Ithaca is a small city and it's very different, too different to really even compare to a major urban city.

My impression is that if you don't like being cramped in the campus you aren't going to like Cornell or want to stay here.

if you can't find stuff to keep you entertained at Cornell it's cuz you're not trying hard enough.

at least for me a lot of the time it's not a matter of being bored, it's not being able to attending functions I'd like to because I have homework, studying, or office hours that demand my attention. I think there's a lot to be said for just having some good-looking libraries to study in.

I think NYC is the coolest place ever. I'm like a fangirl of a city and I spend excessive amounts of time daydreaming about it (it's kind of messed up). nevertheless, I think there's a lot to be said for the calmer and more peaceful atmosphere in Ithaca and on campus. when I'm studying, it's me and the information...
