I'm a freshman at a small liberal arts school and I'm hoping to transfer after my sophomore year. I'd try and transfer now but I'm on a really great scholarship and I can't afford another school for three years.

I got a 4.0 last semester and I'd really like to keep it. The thing is I'm taking 18 hours this semester and one of my teachers is kind of crazy. I have no idea if I'll me able to make an A in that class but I'm only making a B plus now. I really hate the class, it was required for my history major but I've realized this semester that I'm not going to be a history major if I stay at this school.

Can I get away with withdrawing from the class with a pass or will it look really bad to other colleges I apply to? I'm not sure I can keep a 4.0 even if I drop the class, but it will probably hurt my gpa regardless.

When you drop a class because a B+ in it, it shows that your desire is not to learn, but to get the numbers on a sheet of paper. This is a big turn off to any selective college in my opinion.

The difference between a 4.0 and a 3.9ish with a W is miniscule, but that W is never helpful.

if you aren’t enjoying the class, and/or it serves no purpose for future pursuits then drop it. 1 or 2 W’s on a transcript will not matter at all…very common to see them amongst pre-meds that have gpa concerns…now 10 W’s on your transcript would look odd unless you’re in the military or something and got deployed mid semester

For the smart student each college class usually takes at least 100 hours of class time and study time (and that might be low) Do you really want to spend another 100 hours of your life retaking the class? (If not more) As mentioned by Moonman the GPA difference is miniscule. Consider that for your entire college career that one B a semester will leave you with a 3.8GPA, which is plenty high enough to get interviews with all the prestigious employers. In that raified air an employer will care more about your personality and internships (work experience) than a 4.0 average. GL

Go have a chat with your advisor. Dropping might be a no-no if you want to keep your big scholarship.

One B isn’t likely to change your options as a transfer - especially if it is not in your major.

I think that yolocholo gives bad advice. Someone who is truly interested in learning doesn’t play games, take baby classes, and drop courses to get the highest GPA possible. If admissions committees had any sense they would reject these types, because a serious student doesn’t do this.

If you truly dislike the class, drop it. I think that you want to drop mainly because you have a b+, though, in which case I would say stay in!

dunno if my advice is bad or not…it’s just reality…I’m all for pushing myself academically which is why I’m personally moving from a school I am comfortable at to a top 10 ranked institution. Reality is transfer admissions are a giant game and you need to understand how to make the system work in your favor if you have designs on transferring to the most competitive universities.

I don’t make the rules I’m just viewing things from a wider angle with a different end goal in mind. It’s worked for me…15 months ago I was starting at a community college and I just got admitted to a school ranked in the single digits. I’m also a pre-med so I understand the fixation with high grades OP is dealing with especially as it relates to transfer options next year. And in my eyes, and that of at least 2 adcoms as of today I haven’t been taking baby courses…I took a 300 level Islam class because I wanted to learn something about the subject, and if the pre-med requirements knocked out in a year are baby classes then I wonder what a real schedule looks like.

Look at the bigger picture OP and figure out what your goals are personally…just don’t choose to do something b/c it’s the ‘noble’ thing to do. At the end of the day look out for your best interests especially since this class is meaningless to you looking fwd.
