Surprise! It is a chance thread. I'm currently a junior in High School. I love the school and really want to know if whether or not if I keep up my grades and EC's I'd have a shot at getting in!

I seriously hope you’re joking or a ■■■■■. I feel as if this website is a breeding ground for stupidity. Use your common sense. You’re #1 in your class, you have a boatload of ECs, your schedule is rigorous, your SATs are on track to be good. You do the math…

Thanks for the reply. It’s just really easy to feel like a slacker when I’m reading some of the other chance threads. There’s kids that are like varsity athletes/valedictorians/class presidents/state tuba champions that have written published research papers and 500 other things. It’s just easy to feel inadequate sometimes. haha.

Some of the responses to ‘chance threads’ in CC would be humorous, if it weren’t for the sad fact that people take them seriously. There are students whose statistics are way above the median for a university who are told that they have ‘no chance’. And let’s face it, it’s nerve wracking for the students.

atx – here’s the bottom line.

You’re ranked #1 in your class. You expect your SATs to be over 2100. You have above average ECs. I assume that your essay will be fine as will your teacher and guidance counsellor recommendations.

Basically, you should feel comfortable applying to any school in the US. The only thing you lack is what I would call a WOW factor – for example winning a Sieman’s award or something like that. Guess what over 90% of the students admitted to Harvard lack this WOW factor too. That’s the good news.

Now, here’s the bad news. The admissions rates at the top 15-20 schools are miniscule. Below 20%. Northwestern cannot accept every class valedictorian who applies. Northwestern cannot accept every student with SAT scores over 2250 who applies (and even probably rejects some with perfect SAT scores).

However, don’t lose heart. What you have to do is apply to a number of top schools. If you have a first choice, apply either ED or SCEA (if such options are available). It is highly likely that you will get into an excellent school with your record. Believe it or not, as chaotic as it sounds, the process really does work in the vast majority of cases. Though you may get a surprise with any individual school, you should get into a top top tier university. Just make sure to take the process seriously. Also, make sure you have at least one ‘safe’ school – just in case.

Thanks zephyr15! I really appreciate your input, and the valuable information and encouragement you gave me! It’s nice to know people actually care about what I have to say on here. I definitely have some “safe” schools in mind as well.
