After America had filled Manifest destiny by acquiring California many began to look overseas for new territories. This idea was quickly brought into consideration when post Spanish-American USA got new territories:Cuba,Philippines,Guam and Puerto Rico. These new territories brought many views. Pro-expansionists argued that expansionism would bring more economic opportunities, blacks would achieve equal rights, and that it was the only logical option for America to take. Anti-expansionists argued it was an unconstitutional approach,it contradicted what America was built on-freedom,and that America was overdoing themselves by taking these lands. America’s national identity also faced drastic changes during this time as well.

During the Industrial revolution America invented a lot of new products. These products needed a new place to be sent to. With the new territories pro expansionists felt that this was a good opportunity to send their new products. This idea was further felt with the China’s open-door policy. Many felt that America had no choice but to accept these land or else face war and shame. President William McKinley’s speech relates to the pro expansionist views because it showed that USA had no choice but to take these lands(document 3). They also felt that it was America’s job to take the “savage lands and civilize the natives”. Theodore Roosevelt speech from 1899 in Chicago, relates to the pro expansionist views, because it says that it was America’s job to take the lands. It also later influenced nativist sentiments(document 5). In the late 1800s blacks began to advocate for the pro expansionist views. They felt that with a greater diversity blacks would gain equal rights. A similar situation was felt in the Civil war when Blacks had joined the Union. A newspaper called Colored America from 1898 in Washington D.C, relates to the pro expansionist views, because it felt that America would find black help useful and give equal rights. It also later influenced the Civil rights act of 1964.

Anti expansionists were also present during this time. They felt that if America took these territories immigration to america would soon be soon to follow taking ‘’native american jobs’’. This caused many to have an increase in nativism. Others felt that new territories would compromise the reason America was formed, freedom. William Sumner from 1899 in Yale university, relates to the anti expansionist views, because it states that America was taking away its all men are equal rights(document 2). It was earlier influenced by the Constitution. Some felt this would make America look like an empire much rather than a democracy(document 6). William Bryan from 1900 at his campaign for presidency, relates to the pro expansionist views, because it showed that it was a policy of an empire. It also later influenced the return of the Panama Canal. Others argued America was overdoing themselves by taking care of these lands. Puck from 1904 , relates to the anti expansionist views, because it showed that America was overdoing themselves. It also later lead to the policy of isolationism (document 7).

After Spanish american war America’s national identity faced drastic changes. America was now known as a powerful country that could defend its borders and others. An earlier effect was notioned post revolutionary war when America was able to beat Great Britain. Later on during world war 1 and world war 2 America was a key factor to the Allies victory. The new national identity also helped promote a sense of nationalism in the hearts of Americans. These however in effect caused many to have nativist sentiments.

Post Spanish American war America profoundly changes. America was now seen as a force to be reckoned with. This caused an uprising in nativism and anti-expansionist views. Anti-expansionist argued taking over a country was by no means a democracy,it was unconstitutional, and that it made America an empire. Pro-expansionists argued it wasn’t Americas choice if they wanted these lands, they also seeked revenue from other countries such as Asia and the ever growing China. The new national identity helped promote a sense of superiority in Americans.
