Is This A Good Idea?

Uhm, first, let me say this: I'm horrible at writing. And anything English/Reading/That side of the brain related. Haha.

For the commonapp, one of the essays ask for an elaboration of an extracurricular activity/work experience.

My sister has CP. She's mentally disabled and she can't walk. Could I write about her for this essay? I've honestly put in a lot of time to helping my sister, and i honestly think I could write a pretty meaningful essay about her, I'm just not sure if I should use this portion of the application to do that...

Any takes?

I think that it would be okay to do that. However, you must make certain that the essay ends up being revealing about you, not her.

Thanks. I’m definitely going to do that. I mean, obviously bits will be about her, but I’m hoping by explaining what I’ve done to help her succeed will make my character shine.

Again, thanks for your input.

Anyone else?

would you really classify that as extracurricular activity/work experience though?

I believe you would be answering the ‘person that has had a significant influence on you’ prompt. Also, write about a time with her specifically and give the reader a chance to see your relationship and how important it is for each of you. How has she influenced you as a person. Writing about ‘this is my sister with CP and here is how I help her’ is not a great essay. But letting the reader know how important she is to you, how she has influenced your life and you hers as well as why you care about her is a great essay.
