There are probably others I am forgetting, but does this list bring out my passions for tennis, percussion (music), and math? Any other general comments? Thanks a lot, everyone!

For the marching band, #36 is for the whole band, not just me lol. Sorry, I did not make that clear in my post before.

sounds pretty good. you wouldn't happen to be delbarton would you? (they're killer @ tennis :P)

I happen to think those are really awesome. I wish my ECs were as good as yours.

your list kinda sound like my ECs. But instead of varsity tennis, JV track.

what marching band are you from? what do you guys compete under? (USSBA, BOA, etc?)

^^yeah..i was wondering the same thing.

maybe we killed you @ comp. last year ;)

Sunshine_breeze, we play under USSBA.

Leah377, maybe you did kill us at the competition lol.

(don't know how to put in smiley)

bump......

the only notable things that adcoms would care about is ur mini-med thing (taking advantage of educational opps), class officer (leadership) and and maybe varisty tennis (excelling in sports).

ur application would be ideal for a NJ public univs. but for national univs....u need national accomplishments or a really good hook...none of the marching band, tennis stuff or a gazillion clubs....that's very common.

umm...ABG, I'm not too sure about that. My major EC was a volunteering program in my state only and most of my awards came from state math competitions...I'm going to Duke. oh...and I was on my tennis team too...and we didn't win anything.

lemme guess...ure from NC? if u're...then we all know Duke's prejudice for in-state students. if u're not...then they key thing to note here is u have won AWARDS at the STATE level...that's hella good....not just qualified for something like espn00524.

and seriously...every single high school in the nation has a tennis team...and u were one person on one team...and apparently u or ur team didn't win anything at a significant level...so do u really think it mattered? no. and for the volunteering part....it's unique that u were in such a program..and it's like the major thing...but who doesn't do volunteering and apply to top 50 schools?

congrats though getting into DUKE.

Yeah, I agree with the others.

It doesn't really matter if you join 30 clubs. Nothing really stands out.
Some people don't join any clubs and they still get into HYPS since they have another particularly outstanding area.

Try to find something to do that's beyond the average limits of a cliched hs activity.

~Varsity Tennis (4 years) (competitive selection) (team regularly wins competitive tennis county and state of NJ)- I'd say that's OK, but a lot of people have that. Maybe you can be recruited?

~Marching Band (4 years) (competitive selection) (part of DrumLine) (something like #36 in all of NY, NJ, CT, PA, MD, and NC) (section leader, etc.)- That's good. See if there are marching bands in your schools of choice.

~Jazz Ensemble
~Percussion Ensemble -If your applying to HYP,know that ALOT of the applicants to these schools are accomplished musicians.
~Math Club - Pretty common club to be in.
~Math Team- Common as well.
~Class Officer (Student Organization) - See above
~Task Force Club- I'm not sure what this is.
~Interact Club- Same as above.
~Ultimate Frisbee Club- Uhhh, it might be a "quirk", maybe you could incorporate in your essay.

~Table Tennis Club -same as above, but its less odd.
~Tutoring - If you found it to be meaningful and maybe mention it in your essay.
~A couple of different summer programs- Could you elaborate?

Awards/Other
~National Spanish Examination (Recognition, place, etc.)- Nothing special
~North Jersey Region Band Qualifier and Participant- Good, but not uncommon.
~North Jersey Region Orchestra Qualifier- Same as above.
~Completion of Mini-Med. School Program taught at the Mount Sinai Medical School- If you want to be a doctor, or something else related to that field.
~Attendant at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) (a member of the Earth Institute at Columbia University) Public Lecture Series.
I'm not familiar with this, is it a selective program?
~Loads of tennis awards (winning regional torunaments, etc.)- See tennis comment.
~Qualified for and participated in a various amount of math competitions (such as Bergen County Mathematics League, New Jersey Mathematics League, Continental National Mathematics League, Seton Hall Joseph W. Andruskiw Mathematics Competition, American Mathematics Contest, Association of Mathematics Teachers of New Jersey Competition, and American High School Mathematics Examination) If your intended major is math/science/tech. related, then this is pretty good.
~Perfect attendance (since kindergarten too, lol) -Wow, that's pretty impressive. Maybe you could incorporate it in essay?

I hope that helps some.

To ABG: No, I'm not from NC...I'm from FL. and I guess you're right, I was just pointing out that you don't NEED EC's at the national level to get into good universities.

I think the OP's list of EC's is quite good, I definitely did not have nearly that many.

Quality over quantity, baby.

Your EC's seem pretty stereotypically Asian - math, tennis, table tennis, tutoring, frisbee... if only you'd done orchestra instead of band.

What kinds of schools are you aiming for?

In any case, though, your EC's don't make you stand out at all but they're probably decent for the schools you're looking at.
