Is this a good time to ask for merit aid?

My son was selected to attend an all expenses paid prospective student weekend at a state university (a UC) that is his top choice.

Would this student weekend be a good time for him to speak with the financial aid people and/or admissions or other departments, during this 3 day 2 night weekend, to plead his case and ask the school to consider giving him a little bit more in aid/grants/scholarships?

The school COA is about $31K. There is a gap of about $7,000. They do not give freshman work study money.

He is a little shy, but passionate once he gets going. I am thinking this request should come from the student. The school is six hours away and not so easy to pop in and talk to financial aid.

Or should he just have fun with the other local students and not worry about finances - and focus on the school and the fit? He just turned 18 and is excited to fly up there without me.

Or will he be missing a perfect opportunity to ask?

Yes or no?

Thanks!

I would suggest he make an appointment. He can say why he is on campus, and how this IS his top choice. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
