Is this a good UVA Pre-med schedule?

I was just looking around on Lou's List and picking out some classes that I'd need for pre-med w/ Bio major. I know that I might not get this schedule since I'm not Echols and have no priority whatsoever, but this is just an attempt to get to know your opinions on teachers and classes for summer orientation.

My schedule goes:

-Bio 2010 - David Kittlesen - MoWeFr - 11:00AM - 11:50AM - (3 Units)
-Bio Lab/Lecture 2030 - David Kittlesen - Th - 6:00PM - 6:50PM - (2 Units)
-Bio Lab 2030 - David Kittlesen - We - 6:00PM - 9:00PM - (2 Units)
-Math 1310 (Calculus I) - Carolyn Yarnall - TuTh - 11:00AM - 12:15PM - (4 Units)
-Spanish 1010 - Staff - MoWeFr - 9:00AM - 9:50 - (4 Units)

If I take the Spring semester classes for those, I'd be done with my biology and math requirement for med school in my first year. And from what I can tell, this is 15 units/credits? After this, could I take chemistry second year, orgo the summer after second year and physics third year to finish my requirements? Is that a good plan?

I understand that I probably wont get that schedule, this is just something I thought I'd plan for orientation. My schedule doesn't seem too hard (compared to what I've seen in past UVA schedule threads), and I might add English in there if you guys think it'll be a good idea, but that would push me in the 18-19 credit area.

Any tips, comments, suggestions?

Thanks

Don’t add english
look up professors on thecourseforum dotcom

I looked on that, ratemyprofessors, and Lou’s List and found that Kittlesen is the only Bio 2010/2030 professor this fall. I found that the Math 131 teacher was really good on ratemyprofessors but couldn’t find her on thecourseforum.

For Spanish, it only lists classes as staff. I don’t think Spanish 1010 should be too hard with any teacher, but I could be wrong >.<

Anything else Hazel or anyone else?

yeah thats fine then, the prof is the most important thing to check.
have backups if you can’t get into your classes. bio shouldn’t be a problem because it is big (make sure more than 1 of the labs fits your schedule) but spanish or something you might get locked out of. so have backups… the english class you wanted to take or another CLAS general ed requirement.
what major do you want to do??

I’m going to major in biology with a minor in maybe religious studies or history. Hopefully I can get into Spanish 101 so I can finish my language requirements in my first two years.

If you can’t, try taking a religion or history class then.

Don’t count on getting Spanish 1010 before 1st semester second year. Unless something changes dramatically from the past two years, there will only be four classes of 1010 offered in the Fall and no classes of 1010 offered in the Spring. As you can see from Lou’s list, there is only one more seat open in that course for Fall now. At most, they will add 4 seats total to make four classes of 18 each.

I guess there is so much more demand for Spanish classes than they have teachers available, the teachers are saved for the upper level classes that most first years test into. Because of the shortage, UVa discontinued the Spanish minor a couple years back. With the importance of Spanish in America today, I wish UVa would make it easier to begin Spanish at the college level, but so far they have not decided to do that.

If you have taken a romance language before or have taken Latin, you might want to petition to take 1060, Advanced Beginner Spanish. See [Foreign Language Placement Index — Undergraduate, College of Arts & Sciences, U.Va.](http://artsandsciences.virginia.edu/college/requirements/competency/language_placement_index.html#spanish)

“SPAN 1060 1-2 years of High School Spanish, SAT II Subject Test score of 420-510, Orientation Foreign Language Placement exam score of 0-325, experience in a related foreign language, 1-2 years of High School Spanish or permission of the department.”

There are a lot more seats available in that class, and if you can’t get into it in the Fall, it is offered again in the Spring. Span 2010 and 2020 are offered each semester. With this sequence you can finish your Foreign Language requirement in 3 semesters instead of 4. You might not want to try this if you have difficulty with foreign languages, though. Good luck!

Why would you want to take orgo over the summer? Given the compressed summer schedule, it would be tough.

You also need to take a year of English. Normally one semester of Composition and one semester of Literature. Personally, I think that’s important to fit in, but I’m not sure of putting yourself into 18-19 credits first semester.

Normally, at least at UVA, pre-med students take chemistry first-year/second-year, then biology second-year.

If you want to major in bio, I’d strongly recommend taking chemistry in your first year. That’s because it’s helpful to have orgo under your belt before you really get deep into a bio major, because it’s very helpful background. You don’t need to take bio in your first year even if you plan to declare it as a major.

I have a question about organic chemistry over the summer. Are summer classes just for a semester? Would I not be able to fit in Ochem II w/ lab in the summer or can you take a full year in the summer?

I just wanted to space things out and give enough time to my prereq classes so I can learn and be prepared for the MCAT. I feel like taking bio and chem first year with labs would be too much. Especially the labs.
