Is this a scam?

I received a letter in the mail yesterday and it said:

Congress is set to change major aspects of the Federal Student Loan Program and your options for financial aid may change. Please call the federal student loan hotline below to determine what your current options are. In just minutes, this toll-free phone call will help esnure you are prepared.

Normally, I'd toss this sort of thing away the moment I finish reading it but I remembered reading in the NY times a few months ago that Congress really was going to make some big cuts in financial aid...and so of course this worries me. Did anyone else receive this notification? It didn't have a clear return address and so I am inclined to think it's fraud...but all the same, I wonder how much Congress is going to take away from financial aid...

Toss it.

There is some truth to what they are saying, but these people are simply trying to get you to borrow from them. Lenders vary in the level of "origination fees" they charge - so if and when you do borrow, you want to shop around. People who send you mail like that invariably are going to be offering the worst possible options in terms of fees & interest level.

I got that thing too and was suspicious because it came in an unmarked envelope and was printed on pink paper, lol
