What's up with these student loan company mailings?

Recently, I've been getting assorted advertisements about student loans. They seem pretty disingenuous and misleading; i.e, "Dear [name] and [parent of name], YOU may qualify for $_____ in loans!" and sent in envelopes stamped with "IMPORTANT!" and postscripted with "Reply in ___ days!"

When I check their websites, though, it's clear that there is nothing special about it; they appear to have been around for a long time, offering the same services to ANYONE willing to buy in. So to me, it smells a little fishy.

What's the deal? Are these "college loan services" to be trusted? What are the advantages of their services, if any? Why them?

I promised to be a lurker, however, whenever someone makes a statement that could cost people $$ and I mean a lot of $$; I must speakup.

Zoogies: If you have Stafford Loans, Perkin's, or parents have PLUS loans, then you should do further research. If you don't then please let other people make their own decisions on their own research.

I see you are not a risk taker. You will go far.

You have JUST 10 days to make an application. Probably +90 days to give your rejection. ( ours eventually took 5 months, 150 days, to give our final answer)

...I'm afraid I don't understand.

When, in any way, did I attempt to obstruct other people from making decisions on their own research? I'm merely suspicious and asking around for advice from people more experienced with these matters - are they legit?

10 days from when? It seems as if anyone can make an application at any time; is there a purpose to having a deadline 10 days from, I don't know, postmark date, receipt of letter, etc? How would they even know? And what do you mean by 'rejection?'

Sorry, I'm still fairly a novice when it comes to these matters.

what is itstoomuch talking about? zoogies is asking if anyone else has had good results with any of those loan mailings? I get them in the mail too, and I too am wondering if they are the best choice for loans...I have no idea what itstoomuch is talking about.

lol
