In this second essay, please reflect on something you would like us to know about you that we might not learn from the rest of your applicationor on something that you would like to say more about. (in 500 words)

I was thinking to answer this question by talking about how I am a good friend and basically just a really nice person (yeah, I've been having a hard time thinking of topics).

Is that an absolutely terrible idea or is there a chance admissions would respond well to something like this?

For many colleges, that topic probably is fine. Yale, however, is getting 20,000 applicants or more - 95% of which are great students and some may even have great connections. Unless your other stats, accomplishments and essay are already super impressive, you may consider writing something that makes you special. The truth is everyone is a great friend to some other people and most people do believe they are a nice person. As I never gave my kidney or donate all my bank account to the needy, I personally can’t see how I can write an essay with that topic that could impress anyone. But then, again, I am not a nice person nor a good writer according to my kids. I am just an old fart with an engineering and MBA degree. :-)

If you write it uniquely enough, it should be fine. Include something specific about your character though, and then elaborate. Talking about yourself in general is risky, and I don’t recommend it unless you have over the top writing skills. Many people applying to Yale will have better topics, so keep that in mind. It wouldn’t hurt to think of something else too, but otherwise, as I said before, it’s a fine topic.

Also, any chance that any of you would like to review my essay? t
