Is this an OOPS?! DS engineering major signed up for Muir instead of Warren.

When doing the applications, DS was pretty swamped and just put Muir for his first choice since so many people said it was the "best" with the least amount of requirements (and the best dining-lol.)

Now that he found out that he got in and received his first choice of college, he is worried that he should have picked Warren since Warren is close to engineering and has the best/least "requirements" for engineers. He was accepted to aerospace engineering.

What do you think? We've heard you can't switch, true?

There is nothing to worry about. Being in Miur is perfectly fine. Although Warren is geared towards engineering somewhat, Miur GE is still really lax regardless and maybe even more so than even as a engineering major in Warren. And some student can try to petition to switch colleges. It is usually very rare, and almost always people switch INTO miur and not out of miur.

Thanks DistressStudent. At the time he ranked the schools, he was thinking it would be good to NOT be with all engineering and he would meet most of the Warren kids in his classes so he would have new friends in Muir, too. Sounds good but then we saw that Warren had the best requirements for engineering and had second thoughts. I think it will be fine whatever happens. He has to come back and look again now that he knows he is in. I think they said something about an overnight or admitted students day so we’ll have to set that up. Thanks again for your reply.

Warren doesn’t have all engineering students. And the whole meeting people from different colleges thing doesn’t really mean much. The mix of students in each college is pretty varied and arbitrary. And you’ll never know more than like 10% of the people living in your college anyway so there are still hundreds of people left around that you haven’t met that are no different from those in other colleges.

The difference in GEs for your DS (I don’t what that means by the way, is it like son or daughter?) between Muir and Warren will probably be like no more than one class different so they’ll be perfectly fine in Muir. It’s also really hard to switch but there’s almost no reason to in this case.

Depending on your son’s AP credits and what he can get waived requirements-wise, he might actually be better off at Muir. I only had to take ~5 lower division classes in total to finish my GE requirements because of pre-existing credits (and 3 can overlap with your major requirements). Warren GEs have AoC requirements with upper division classes instead, so they could foreseeably be more time-consuming than Muir ones, even for an engineer.

Anecdotally, most of my friends at Muir were engineers, and they’ve had no problems getting their GE requirements done in time for graduation. Muir Res Halls are really only a 5-10 minute walk away from Jacobs as well. As others have said, really no reason to attempt to switch.

Thank you so much for your replies. DS just was notified that he got the Jacobs Engineering Scholarship and is being told by others that he “should” have picked Warren so I’ll tell him what you’ve said. I’ll also sit down and work out his AP/college credits to see where he would benefit the most but from what I’ve read here, Muir is still a great choice. Thanks again!
