I have a question for a friend of mine (not a CCer). He asked me if his piano abilities could be considered a hook for colleges.

Verbatim (including the spelling error he made, lol) from his little sheet of paper I have in front of me right now:

13+ years experience
Approxamately 70 total public performances
5 solo public performances, 2 of them internationally
Miscellaneous performances with choir groups
Have also played at weddings

Well, that alone isn't necessarily a hook. But, if your friend can incorporate that into his essay and show that he has remained committed to a certain hobby, then it might be considered a hook.

Well, was the solo performance with an orchestra or just a student recital. Did he perform through winning a concerto competition/ invitation??? A lot of ppl have the opportunity to perform internationally if their school music group goes on a tour.

no

no offense, but MOST people who go to top colleges play some kind of instrument well. Personally, I rock at the violin but it didn't get me in. and there was nothing really bad about my transcript. now if u can put that much dedication in 4-5 things then thats a lock

he performed internationally by himself (by invitation), no school tour or anything like that

otherwise, solo performances were student recitals

Extremely talented students may consider submitting a cd even if music is not the intended major. The cd may be shipped to the music department, who will then give it a listen. If they like what they hear, it could help. Again, this is something that would vary by college, so your musical friend needs to contact each one.

The international performance and maybe some of the others could be listed under honors, perhaps.
