Is this kid a future CCer?

http://www.thatvideosite.com/video/4432

He was the kid that won the spelling bee. I would shoot myself in the foot if I had a roommate like that.

He may be smart and able to spell but I think its pretty obvious he has no social skills at all, which is a bit sad and unfortunate.

Wow..he's not modest at all...S0ad is right...no social skills at all...He'll fit perfectly at CC...Jk...I like last years winner better...at least she seemed nice.

I wonder what it must've felt like to be the interviewer. :D She made a Herculean effort to communicate with him and be nice.

Wow, kid looks like an idiot. If I met that kid he needs to be punched in the face,

This is a tragic example of homeschooling gone wrong...

and being able to spell doesn't make you smart. means you have a good memory, but that doesn't make you smart.

Ditto what ChaosTheory said.

I third what ChaosTheory said.
I bet most CCers have better social skills than that. By most, I mean 94%. Also what goat4d said, he needs to be punched in the face.

he just needs some darn interaction of what normal teenage boys go through. My roommate last semester was one of these types that his parents kept him locked up. he didn't know anything, he got really good grades but otherwise you could ask him a question and he would have no clue. He had the same problem, very bad speech skills, I watched a documentary on Dicovery and they had this thing of kids talking to dogs because they are kept so isolated. Adter around 11-12 the damage is irrecoverable.

Perhaps his mom should not have agreed to the interview. I don't know how old this kid is, but that interview was pretty painful. Some kids (2 of mine come to mind) might be too shy for interviews like that. My other talks nonstop, which could also be a problem. Parents should know their kids' personalities well enough to decide what is or is not appropriate for a kid's age and maturity level. On the other hand, having had this experience, maybe he'll do better next time he's in a similar situation.

this evan o-dorney guy is so weird! i agree with all of you.. i watched the interview- his voice is kind of weird and he did some things with his hand (haha!) and he has to juggle to keep himself from looking at objects and doing math (has to keep hands busy) while doing spelling... he likes music and math better... why not just focus on all these math competitions like mathcounts and all.

Scombridae

Poor kid./*******/

thats just sad..

evan o'dorney is kind of a genius. he's in 8th grade this year and was an honorable mention on the USAMO -- i.e. he placed in the top 24 in the nation on the exam. i've heard that he's skipping high school entirely.

Jeez, I just watched it again. I would rather live in a box on the street than have a roommate like that. I get I get that he's like a genius, but seriously?

This is unfortunate, and his win should not be lauded. He revealed that he hated spelling bee but that he had to do it, presumably pressured by his parents. We should not encourage parents who force their children into things to keep doing what they do. I was actually rooting for Nate Gartke (the second place winner), Isabel Jacobsen (she seems like a future world leader), and Matt Evans (multi-year national contestant). I want to cry for the CNN reporter who interviewed him.

I agree with ninja.of.love... this is just homeschooling gone WAY too far. Wow.... just wow... I felt horrible for the interviewer when he was 'correcting' her repeatedly... Just... wow

I agree, tisthetruth. I too was rooting for the runner-up, even if he was a Canadian in an American bee :).

What I don't get is how his parents have managed to raise a genius (although that is arguably inborn), they didn't manage to teach him basic social etiquettes that 5 year olds can manage.
