Is this Possible to Transfer to These Places for Anyone?

So my friend and I were talking about where we wanted to transfer to after community college (CA community college). He said he wanted to go to Cambridge, Oxford, Bristol, Edinburgh, Durham, Manchester, and some UCs. I was perfectly fine with him wanting to go to UCs, but those UK universities out of his league. I am not trying to be dream killer or anything, but I don't want him to get his hopes and be blindsided by rejections. Is it possible for him to even get into at least one of these from a community college, even with a 3.8 and above?

His Stats:
Never taken the SAT
ACT:22
HS: 2.7 GPA
Got D's in his AP classes
Never taken an AP test
a few honors, but B's and C's in those

Now, honestly ask him why he had such terrible grades and test scores. Is he really capable of receiving a GPA of 3.0+ in college? Now, I am not the one to judge, my high school GPA was 2.9. But honestly, does he have what it takes?

He does have what it takes. He had 3.8 up to the second semester sophomore. We both suffer from depression and think that what messed him up and same goes for me. I have been trying to get him out the house more, but he still in the dark cloud. I had 2.9 so I don’t want to be too hard on him.

I am not an expert, but the ACT should more or less correlate with what he/you’ve learned up to that point. Is depression really an excuse? Plus, 3.8 in underclassmen classes really mean nothing IMHO. Looking back on high school, nothing really is all that hard that you can’t get a 3.0+ (assuming 3.0 is a B). Again, who knows.

What major is he?

He was suicidal and so was I. It was hard for both us and teachers and students bullied us. We have speech impediments and that what caused our depression. On top of that, his mom committed suicide and his dad left him and his siblings with his aunt.

He is an applied math major

Well, sorry, I am an emotionally distant kid.

It’s fine, there a lot of people like you on this board. At least you apologized for it.

To be honest, I am pretty sure that’s impossible. Firstly they dont have community colleges in the UK (at least to my knowledge) & it is much harder to transfer over there even from higher level schools. Additionally, the ones he is looking at RARELY accept students from an American high school. And ultimately, the schools that he is looking at are comparable to the ivey league of the UK, do you think it is possible for people to transfer to Harvard or brown from a community college? It would be much harder to transfer to the schools he is looking at in Britain. With most schools that prestigious, they recieve far more applicants with 4.0 gpas.from community colleges than can possibly be addmitted and as such must look at high school information to compare. Not having taken the SAT will force schools to rely on his GPA & ACT and chances are, he would fall into the bottom percentile being rejected. Keep in mind that brittish universities ONLY look at ECs that are relevant to the major & are forboding to excuses, no matter how good they may be. Outside out of the bubble that is CCCs, community colleges are frowned upon. If he finds that he was accepted, through some miracle how would he pay for it? Brittish universities offer NO financial aid and charge outrageous tuition fees to foreign students, and living expenses and taxes are quite expensive over there.
Bottomline: Brittish colleges verry rarely accept American undergrads, may be impossible to get into as a transfer student, and an EXTREMELY slim chance of the bad highschool carreer transfer app as this seems to be.

I would advise hom to go to the best UC he got into, and there is no reason he cant further his education in brittain.

It’s not just about the UK universities being out of his league, as many of them do not accept transfers, only freshman applicants.

Best of luck to the both of you, as I know someone who’s still recovering from difficult junior/senior years, and it’s a tough road to recovery for them sometimes.

I’ll try to tell him this nicely. Thanks so much for the advice guys/gals

If he goes to a california community college his slate will be wiped clean and if he gets high enough grades, he can get guaranteed admission to many of the schools.

I know he will for UCs, but not for the those Unis in the UK

I told him this gentle manner. Now he wants to go to UCB, U of Toronto, and McGill

Wow, what are his stats and major?

I think those are more reasonable considering he does have a 3.8 CC GPA

As long as he still has an auto acceptance school waiting for him

Yeah, but it still depends on his major. If he is an impacted major, then obviously that would be a reach.

I looked at McGill and UBC’s transfer admissions and they didn’t have anything that required high school credential. So hopefully he can pull off a 3.8 and above be happy. We are lucky to be in Cali and be able to go to UCs and USC from CCCs.

Oh yeah, they dont look at high school stuff but I have yet to see someone get in for their EECS major w/o a 4.0 major GPA so it REALLY depends on your major…some are easier to get into than others. Not all 3.8s will automatically be accepted though xD.

Sorry, I wasn’t talking about for those Canadian universities, I was referring to some UCs.

It’s definitely possible for him to get some UCs such as UCLA and UC Irvine.
