Is this really a bad score for top tier schools?

SAT I:
total-2120
CR-630
M-800
W-690(essay 9)

i'm aiming for Brown

also applying to
Duke
Northwestern
Stanford
and some others

i'm a international so it's really not easy for me to reach this score, but they won't take this into consideration right? so tell me this is not good enough...

It’s not good enough for those schools, especially CR.

You might consider taking the TOEFL since your english appears to be weak.

wow thanks that hurts but still, thanks. this is the first time in my life to hear someone tell me that my english’s weak… but yeah that’s what i need
i’ve taken that
TOEFL iBT 100

err, a 630 in my opinion isnt atrocious, it does NOT mean your english is weak. However its not good enough for brown, so I would retake it one more time if I were you. Good luck!

your english is fine as are your scores. don’t worry about it.

It’s not horrible. Keep in mind that the SAT is aimed at American high school students.

That said, I have a lot of international friends with higher TOEFLs and even some with 750+ CR.

The important question is whether English is your second language or is it the main language you use in your school? If it is your secondary language not predominantly used then 630 is very good and you should convey that in your application. If it is your primary language in your school then I would say it is a little weak for those very competitive schools.

They fully realize that English is not the first language for many intnl applicants. However, from countries where they get scores of applicants with very high CR scores–such as Asian countries, the 630 remain uncompetitive for the most part. The applicant would have to be extraordinary (major national award winner) in math/science for it to go over.

@ttparent: OP is an international student.

That said, what country/region are you from, OP?

PBush, there are English/American schools in foreign countries. OP can be attending one of those schools eventhough he is not American. In those schools, everything is taught in English with curriculum similar to a school here in the US. Or he can be in India or another country where English can be a primary language. 630 CR and 690 W might suggest that he is in this kind of school and college admission will not give him as much benefit of a doubt as another student that does not go to English speaking school.

hmom5, college admission office knows what situation he/she is in by the school name that the person is attending. I am just emphasizing to the person that if he/she barely has a need to use English everyday, and he/she made the effort to become so fluent in English, then the person should emphasize that because it is quite extraordinary.

first, thank you for every one of you who gave me either advice or encouragement.
PBush: i’m from Taiwan
and since that’s the case, Taiwan isn’t a big country so even if i have several national awards, does this fact makes these achievements irrelevant?
also, to ttparent and hmom5, English is indeed my secondary language, but i don’t think that can be an acceptable alibi for not scoring high enough…am i correct? still, is it advisable that i mention my situation in the additional info section in my app so to increase my chance? but just as PBush said, many intls score high despite their disadvantages, i don’t want to appear immature or anything by making such weak excuses besides it was i who screwed up.

thank you again i value your every word
