Is this right decision ? I want to ask you.

My son accepted recently by 4 univs and I live in Washington, Seattle.

Cal Poly SLO Mathematics
UCSB (Undeclared Major)
UCD (Undeclared major)
Univ of Washington (Undeclared Major)

Cal Poly Slo is state university so tuition is low standard but it's around $20,000
UCSB,UCD are about $36,000~$39,000 because I'm out of state.
Univ of Washington is around $12,000 and with Grant he can go there without any money

My yearly income is less than $ 70,000.

Money is great factor to me but I love my son and I want him to be happy with his academic life
in University.

Only by the SAT score Cal Poly is best (1960).
Pros & Cons of this school.(Cal Poly SLO)

Pro : smaller Univ and Learn by doing
very strong academic standard.
cons : very low 4 year graduation rate ( around 25~28%)
very difficult to change Major.
job opportunity of mathematics graduates are low.(around 25~30% Except going up Graduation school)

UCSB,UCD

pro : o. Good research Univs
o. good univs after graduation for Dental school (because My son want to be a dentist so after graduation of
univs he want to go to Dental school)

california is much better for entering Dental graduate school compared WA. because in WA there are only
one Dental school in univ of washington and it's too too much difficult to be accepted very very difficult.
so he has to move to other state at that time of entering Dental school.

Cons : $ 36,000~$39,000 a year ? oh my God ..you wanna kill me ?? very very difficult for me.

Univ of washington.

pro :o. No tuition. scarcely I have to pay no money with some of Grant.

cons : o a little bit noncompetitive to be accepted (SAT total average around 1850)
o after Graduation my son has to move to other State to go to Dental School.

But My mind is leaning to Univ of washington. I want to ask you is that right ?

You can’t afford the UCs, and SLO is likely unaffordable as well. Fortunately the University of Washington, an excellent public flagship, sounds like it will be affordable for you. UW is the obvious choice. For what it’s worth, Washington’s math department is excellent.

Oh really ? washington Univ is good university ? thank you. I want to him to major statistics if he choose Univ of washington ,statistics is very competitive major too. thank you.

UW is a VERY good, excellent university. This is really not a hard choice.

I thought Cal Poly and UCSB,UCD are better than Univ of washington. to listen to your words, Univ of washington is better univ. is that right ?

You are out of state, and unless your son is living with another parent in state you will have to pay out of state costs. The UC’s will be approximately 50K per year and SLO will be about 30K.

uooooowaw…too much expensive…I can’t can’t really I can’t afford the so much money.

USA has a very hostile toward out of state students. approximately 3 times of in state tuition do I have to pay for oos ? that’s too much irrational.

And now I wanna ask you one more Question, after my son graduate Univ, and when he goes up to Dental Graduate School, he has to move to other state because here in wa it’s too much competitive to go to Dental school. and when he go to graduate Dental school he has to pay OOS tuition ?

It’s not unreasonable. California’s priority is to educate in-state students. Here is a link to the cost of attendance for in-state students.

OOS students pay an additional $248 per unit. Using example of 16 units per quarter x $248 = $3968, x 3 quarters = $11904 additional tuition cost for out of state students.

http://financialaid.calpoly.edu/_finaid/coa1415.html</a></p>

The UCs will end up costing a lot more than you have projected out of state when you add room and board, and so will SLO. I think those are all good schools he has been accepted to, and my kids would have applied to UW as an option except WE didn’t think it was worth out of state costs. California dental schools ABSOLUTELY accept people from out of state colleges.

UW seems like the way to go particularly since he is looking at grad school and will likely need whatever help he can get there as well.

Re out of state students, in state students do not pay the actual cost, they are partly paid for by the state because their parents are taxpayers who paid to purchase the land and build and run the university, and it is assumed they generally will stay in state so their education will create job revenue to pay taxes back when they are older. Out of state students aren’t in that situation.

I don’t think Even Cal Poly has to receive 3 times of In state tuition from my pocket, Even it is a good school.
I don’t regret my boy goes to Univ of washington. for Washington persons. washington is best place I began to believe.

UofW is a wonderful choice!

And I think it’s not fair that univ of washington receive around 2 times of in state tuition from OOS, But California receives almost 3 times of In state tuition from OOS. do you think that makes sense ??

Even without money as a factor, UW would be the equivalent of UCSB and UCD, and more highly regarded than Cal Poly. In most states, in order to get the in-state tuition rate you have to be able to show that you moved to that state for some other justifiable reason than to qualify for in-state tuition. That usually means establishing residence in the new state at least a year before enrolling in school. Establishing residence is more than just residing in the new state - it means showing that you’ve severe your ties to your previous state of residence and demonstrating an income sufficient to live in the new state without outside assistance. Many U.S. students would like to attend schools in other states at the in-state tuition rate, but the states have obligations to their own taxpayers to not give away the reduced tuition for which in-state families have paid taxes.

Statistics is an interesting choice of a major for someone whose goal is dental school.

Cal Poly is approx $10K more for out of state students.
The UC’s are approx. 20K more for out of state students.
And UW is approx $20K more for out of state students <a href=“Costs & Financial Aid | Office of Admissions”>Costs & Financial Aid | Office of Admissions;

California’s had serious budget problems recently which have led to drastic cuts in state support for higher education. The UCs are popular among out-of-state students, so out-of-state tuition is a convenient way for California schools to make up some of that lost support.

“out of state students” are admitted to public universities in order to provide extra cash for its budget, due to the state’s budget shortfall (or a state decision to cut funding to the university). California is in more financial trouble than WA and CA universities are kept at an accessible cost instate, so the costs are very high for out of state students. CA public colleges were created for CA students, yet they already have too many students from in-state, too many to accomodate, so if they turn down in-state students (which these universities were created to serve and whose families pay taxes to the university system) it has to be for a good reason and helping the budget is one reason. That’s why California, which is very desirable as a state and has very good universities, can charge exhorbitant prices to out of state students. UWA also costs a LOT of money to attend from out of state ($45-48,000 per year).

University of Washington is in the Top 20 public universities in the country. It’s highly reputable and has excellent programs, and unlike CA universities doesn’t suffer from impaction or overenrollment. If your son does well there (finds internships, gets involved on campus), he’ll have many choices. Dental Schools admit students on merit and in addition to UWA’s, he won’t have trouble finding quite a few outside of WA - he’s not required to attend Dental School where he’s attended college.

Congratulations to your son for getting into excellent colleges and for having such excellent choices. It speaks well of his work ethics. I’m sure he’ll have a great time at UWA. (Come back to post in 6 months to let us know how he’s doing, it’ll help other parents contemplating the same type of choice.)

My friends went to UW and one’s an engineer and the other an MIT PhD. Didn’t hurt their careers, and, frankly, it’s a fine university.

when I looking back at the time of accepted CAL Ploy, whole of my family so happy with my son.
But I began to think again, really is it a good choice to pay 3 times of tuition and low graduate rate ?
that was not a good choice with low opportunity of getting job with mathematics from Cal Poly even though
it’s very tough to be accepted by cal poly. Now I’m going to forget CaL POLY AND choose in state univ of washington.
