I know some of the classes might be full, but this is what I want to take:

Chem 141
Bio 141
Calc
Visual Arts/Art Hist seminar
Heritage 101 (102?)

I absolutely suck at science and math, so I think this is beyond my capability. However, I also want to become a doctor (yes I know, what you want to do changes- use college to figure out what you truly want to do, don't get tied down with ideas, blah blah blah. Becoming a doctor has been, and still is, my current desire.)

I've also heard Chinese for heritage speakers is "Chinese that makes Chinese people hate Chinese." I passed to the 3rd placement level but I think my current skills (since I can't read/write) should place me in the first Heritage class.

SO. My question is, judging on my intelligence and work ethic (decent), would the above schedule be too hard? I really want to skip Chem 141 and take 142 second semester so my schedule can be easier as I adjust to college, but I received only a 4 on the AP and am not sure if my knowledge of chem is solid enough for me to skip 141. :/ I took AP Chem my junior year so it has been a while, and I'm not a science/math person at all. It takes me a long time to understand the concepts.

Even though you are doing a 20-credit hour load (overloading) it should be easy because one of them is a freshmen seminar and the other 4 are introductory courses. You are also currently in track for pre-med so you should be set to go.

//Rant

^ Just FYI,
As a premed you are required/highly recommended to take:
Biology 141, Biology 142, Chemistry 141, Chemistry 142, Mathematics 107, Mathematics 111, Mathematics 112, Chemistry 221+221L, Chemistry 222+222L, Chemistry 301, Chemistry 302, Biology 223, Biology 250, Biology 264, Biology 370+370L, Biology 336, Biology 415, Biology 445, Physics 141, Physics 142, English 185 and an upper level English.
You are to take an MCAT, go through medical school and take USMLE 1, 2, and 3, and become a resident, and possibly a fellow.

I thought this might give you a fair heads up for the overall course workload :]

First semester freshmen are capped at only 19 credit hrs worth of classes, and you have 20 right now so you will have to get rid of one of them. I would suggest dropping Chem 141, but if you do and only take 142, and then 221+222 (orgo), you would still need another semester of upper level chem (such as inorganic) to meet your total required 4 semesters since most med schools don’t take or don’t look favorably on AP credit used to exempt pre-med science classes. Other than that, I would say your schedule is typical for a pre-med freshmen so you’ll do fine. A more rigorous freshmen pre-med schedule, for comparison, would include something like orgo, physics, bio, and multivariable all at once.

As for chinese, CHN 103 - Elementary Chinese for Heritage Speakers, the one you (incorrectly) called as “Heritage 101,” is your best bet if you know how to speak the basics but can’t read/write. I’m not sure where you heard the “Chinese that makes Chinese people hate Chinese” part but despite being a difficult class, most people I’ve talked to end up enjoying it.

good luck

I believe you can petition for your first semester.

Thanks for the replies, everyone!

The 19 credit hour slipped my mind, since I wasn’t going to take Chinese if I took Chem. Then I changed my mind for a couple weeks and forgot to mentally drop Chinese once I added Chem back in, haha.

Imervious0ne- Thanks for the heads up, but I already know that and am prepared for hours of hard work, tears, and sweat. And no thanks, I’m good with the 19 credit hours! I just want to focus on adjusting to college, getting good grades, and striking a balance between social life, academics, and sleep for my first semester.

Collegestu- Thanks for the correction! I quoted from a certain Emory upperclassmen from FB, but he was talking about the third level since a couple of us got to the third placement exam (and failed). But either way, I’ve heard from a couple upperclassmen that Chinese was extremely difficult at Emory, more so than French (another language I was considering).

Currently, I’m still undecided about whether or not I should take Chem 141 my first semester. I really want to take Chinese all four years at Emory, but I suppose a semester less wouldn’t hurt either. I guess I’ll just wait until orientation to talk to my advisors about it!

Please take into consideration that some class sections might not be available and you might have to change your schedule around completely. The language classes are 4 days a week and that might cause some scheduling conflicts. I would definitely not recommend overloading during your freshman year and ESPECIALLY not when enrolled in a language class. It’s just not worth it. You’ll be happier in the long run if you spend those hours that would have been spent on the fifth class on something more useful…like hanging with your freshman pals or participating in a extracurricular that you are interested in.

Sure you could try overloading and then dropping that fifth class if you can’t handle it, but I don’t think its worth it effort. Don’t worry, you have plenty of time to be all premed and stuff after you have adjusted to college life.
