I do not want to overload my senior year with APs. I took three APs (Lang, Physics B, and USH) this year and it was difficult to balance with basketball.

My preferred senior schedule:
AP Calc AB
AP Chem
Econ/Gov.'t (1 semester each)
Exposition (CSU course)
Pre-engineering

Is two APs enough, especially taking 3 junior year?

Planning to apply to UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, CS POLY SLO, CAL POMONA, SDSU

Open to suggestions. Thanks.

Is AP Econ or Govt an option? I don’t think 2 AP’s tells a compelling story.

There are options. However, AP Govt is only offered for zero period, which i am not willing to do. I will probably take AP Econ (one of the easiest APs at my school) and take regular govt during the summer. Will the three APs be enough? Or should I also take AP Lit?

Thanks for the reply btw.

You could try to prepare for the exam on your own. And then take a practice exam, and see if it is worth it to pay for the real one. How many APs are in your school?

I think having 3 AP’s is fine. Depending on the school, AP Lit can be very time-consuming. Other schools, not so much. Considering that you will be spending some time on applications and essays, overloading is not a good idea.

I’m 100% with you on the zero-period concept. I have a hard enough time with an 8:00 first period. I agree with the above poster; if you take regular gov in the summer, a review book is all you need to breeze through the AP test.

My school offers 14 APs. Thanks for the advice. I’m now considering to self-study for AP Govt.

I’m still worried about the rigorousness of my senior schedule as other students at my school are taking 4-5 APs. Will that one extra AP class make a big enough difference during college admissions? Or is it not worth the trouble, since I will be stuck with the class for the whole year?

Self-studying APs senior year provides little or no admissions benefit. It won’t be on your transcript and your AP score will come out long after colleges have announced their decisions.

In my opinion, your proposed schedule looks a bit light for the level of schools you’re targeting.

For a senior, you probably have an intended major and some target schools already. Besides rigorous of the curriculum, think about the usefulness of the AP credits for you and your GPA. Make sure you can handle the schedule without problem. Although a more rigorous senior schedule may be better for admission, the last thing you want is got rescinded due to a poor grade in senior. Nevertheless, it is not necessary having more AP in senior than junior as there are other non AP high rigor options.

I think I will go with 4 APs: Calc, chem, lit, and econ. I probably won’t self-study APs unless I have the free time.

Thanks for all the replies.
