Is this stereotypical?

I'm deciding on a topic for my essay- here is the commonapp prompt

Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.

My plan is to structure a short intro around my failure to make the Freshman Soccer Team- hardly a monumental failure

However, the vast majority of my essay is going to be built around the fact that getting cut from the team enabled me to run cross country- which I feel has opened me to great opportunity.

My main concern here is with regards to getting "cut" by a sports team. One part of me says that its horribly generic, while another part says that this has the potential to be a great essay.

What do you think?

both.
I guess it's probably a common topic but if you can make unique or different and be creative, it can be a great essay. Honesty is key.

In all bluntness, it's a weak failure that you're turning into a moderate success, in my honest opinion. I don't think it's particularly generic, but it's not setting this up to be a very moving essay. Any other options come to mind?
