Is this stereotypical?

I'm deciding on a topic for my essay- here is the commonapp prompt

Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.

My plan is to structure a short intro around my failure to make the Freshman Soccer Team- hardly a monumental failure

However, the vast majority of my essay is going to be built around the fact that getting cut from the team enabled me to run cross country- which I feel has opened me to great opportunity.

My main concern here is with regards to getting "cut" by a sports team. One part of me says that its horribly generic, while another part says that this has the potential to be a great essay.

What do YOU think?

The question is: will that story say anything about you as a person, or simply about how things fell into place despite an unfortunate event? Only you can decide that.

If you write it well, you won't worry about it having to sound too generic, the idea seems fine.
