I wrote my first draft of my college essay and asked a friend to comment on it. He said that I should choose a different topic because this is an extremely common one. I wrote about how my faith makes me different, as I wear a turban, and basically how I went from being uncomfortable with the way I looked to being proud of how I look and overcoming the hurtful comments people make and not letting them bother me anymore. I thought it was pretty unique, but my friend seems to think otherwise.

Would anyone care to read and offer opinions? I will pm it to you, please keep in mind that it is the very first draft.

That sounds fine. Don’t make it sound like a “pity party” and focus on how strong the negativity made you, not the actual hurtful comments themselves.

Also, I apologize as an American for you being made fun of (I know how it feels).

Hey rsingh, can you please tell me how you overcame the harsh comments and how you are now comfortable wearing a turban as I wear one too and am Amrit dhary thanks!

The only problem I see is that there will be plenty of other people writing about very similar things. It is hard to make your story unique when so many people in this country have unfortunately experienced hate. Try to write about something “ordinary” and in it reveal the strengths you have gained over the years.

um it sounds fine for an essay topic. its not like you’re promoting your faith to the ad coms right? then it should be fine. does it sound stuck up? no? then you’re fine there too.

I’m not sure if I would count your essay topic as a common one. If it’s how you’re different, then it’s a great topic.
