Is This Too Much?

I plan to take the SAT in May and the ACT in April. Is this too much?

No. Taking them the same day may be a bit much. They are testing what you know and how you think. No need to really study or prep unless you get particularly nervous or anxious taking tests. Relax and enjoy!

No. I took the ACT and SAT subject tests in the same month, and that wasn’t too terrible.

“No need to really study or prep”. The college board gave up pretending that studying doesn’t help your score on the SAT years ago.

Would I need to talk to my guidance counselor about registering for the ACT?

EMBio10, no, this is not too much. The ACT is a very fast test so, in my opinion, the more practice the better. You can register at actstudent.org, I believe.

Definitely spend some time practicing. You can only take the tests so many times before you have to send a score out. Furthermore, for Juniors, there are SAT IIs and APs to worry about, as well as preserving a decent GPA.
