My transfer essay is about 1,700 words (2.5-3 pages). Is it too long?

Probably. Does it ask for 1000 words? If so, yours is way too long.

Please provide a statement (250 words minimum) that addresses your reasons for transferring and the objectives you hope to achieve.

Note: The Common Application essay should be the same for all colleges. Members that wish to review custom essay responses will request them on their Supplement form.

Your essay will appear on a separate sheet at the end of the application…

This is what it says.

Mine was 4 pages/1300 words.

Yes. It’s too long. It’s known that 1,000 is the limit. No one wants to read 1,700 words. 1,300 was definitely pushing it, 1,700 is just too much.

minimum x 5 or 6 = too long

I’m sorry, entomom, I don’t think I understand what you just wrote.

Oh, okay… I thought it was “maximum”

But then what happens? I’ve put a lot of work and effort into this essay. I don’t know what to do.

The only thing you can do: edit. Ask some of your fellow transfer applicants to take a look at it with a large red highlighter in hand.

^I’m too paranoid, to be honest. I will definitely start editing, though.

Lobzz, I can try and help you out with the editing.
You can PM it to me if you want…

Ahh I have a long essay problem too. I keep cutting and cutting but it seems that every time I do it just gets longer because I keep remembering things I want to add on.

Random, but helpful strategy: Take a highlighter, and being REALLY picky, highlight the most important parts of your essay. Then cut out the extra, and place some short, solid transitions in between the important bits. It’s horrible, because it feels like you’re butchering your baby, but a too long essay is NOT good.

And before you add more things on, really think about if the essay won’t lose anything if the add on stays off.

I hope that makes sense, and that it helps.

I should probably clarify; I’m talking about the 'Why transfer?" essay.
