Is this town rural enough to help chances?

I know that this can play a role in admissions (at least I was told so. =/)

So, I was wondering, is my home town small enough for it to help out in admissions?

I live in central / northern Maine, where the population is about 9,000 (or a little bit over). Our school takes kids from other small, surrounding towns.

98% (this is not a made up statistic :-D) of the population is white. About 17% of the population is under the poverty line, and the median income is about $28,000. It has a population density of 58/km²

....Anyone?

:-(

Some schools have geographic quotas that they try to meet, so being from a small, under-represented state might help you with those schools; check the College Board web site to see if a particular school considers geography. (Colby, Bates, Bowdoin, have quotas that they seek to meet for Maine students, so, ironically, being from Maine may help you w. the schools closest to you.)

Maybe a little - but it is going to depend on where you are applying. What sorts of colleges were you thinking of? And are you male or female (sometimes that matters more than geography).

Where are you considering applying?

Ohiomom, I'm a female Asian (Yikes!), so I'm kind of looking for anything that will help to make up for my race and gender, aside from my first generation status.

I'm considering on applying to some really, really tough schools despite really lackluster SAT scores: HPY, Amherst, Dartmouth, Brown, Tufts, Bowdoin, Colby, BC, BU, etc.

I know that I may not have such a huge shot at some these schools, but I know that if I don't apply, I will have 0% chance of getting in. :-)

BU is not that tough, my friend with 1700 SAT got in with half scholarship :S

You are a first generation in college? It is much more important than where you come from.

Anyone else?

Since you're in a small, rural, low income community in a state that tends to be underrepresented in college admissions, your residence probably will help a bit.

If financial aid is a consideration make sure that you're applying to schools that meet 100% of financial need, something that I don't think BU does. Check the web sites of schools to ensure that you're not setting yourself up to get an admission that you can't afford to accept.

Make sure, too, you have at least one financial safety, a school you know you'll get admitted to, can afford and would enjoy.
