@chb088 You make a good point! Thanks for the positive thoughts. We were just really surprised about the deferral based on the Naviance Scattergram from past students that applied from his high school. I also know that they only have 450 spots in the business school, making it unusually competitive.
North Carolina public colleges have to have 88% in state students. That is why it is tough for OOS students.
82% (83%?)
@robmarync Where did you get that statistic? I’d like to see it for many states, not just NC. Is there someplace they are listed?
@STF4717: It is a policy of the UNC system – promulgated by the UNC Board of Governors – that OOS admissions are limited to an amount “calculated not to exceed 18% of an entering freshman class.” I spoke with someone in the NCSU admissions office a month ago, and she told me that the OOS population at NCSU was at 17%; the practical effect of this is that OOS students would be considered in the same way as in-state students – unlike the situation down the road in Chapel Hill where OOS applicants far exceed the 18% limit on accepted first-year students, and where the statistics of admitted OOS applicants approach what you see at Ivy League schools.
@gandalf78 can you direct me to a link with the policy on this? This will help me advise future students. And if it is a policy of the UNC system, why does Chapel Hill exceed the limit? Really curious as to how this works (not just for NC but for all states!)
I was really surprised to learn that CH has more OOS applicants! This doc shows that the spread in SAT isn’t nearly as wide as I assumed.
Chapel Hill enrollment is 17% OOS

@STF4717: Here is a link to the UNC Board of Governors policy manual that discusses the 18% limit on OOS admissions: https://www.northcarolina.edu/apps/policy/index.php?pg=dl&id=450&format=pdf&inline=1
@byadg123: UNC-CH may have cut back on OOS admissions a bit, because the university has been penalized financially in the recent past for exceeding the cap on OOS admissions, see here, https://alumni.unc.edu/news/fine-okd-after-carolina-exceeds-admissions-cap-for-second-straight-year/
I was surprised that there are more private/parochial than OOS.
And thus endeth the UNC comments on an NCSU board/thread.
Did anyone apply after the October 15 Early decision date and hear back yet? I applied in November and haven’t received update Just wondering if I have to wait til end of March
@2022Engineering yes you likely have to wait until March. Much like those EA’s who applied by 10/15 had to wait until the end of January.
The UNC Board of Governors policy. It is 82% instate and 18% out of state.
